I start by drawing a shape on paper then, scan it, trace it with Flash, import that into Cinema4D, extrude and shape it, build lighting and environment around it, then render and save the image.
I learned to do this through trial and error.

Sword of Darkness? I'd say an Angelic sword. It seems more fitting for something Heavenly
