"Nurse Bahlentine... Would you care to explain about this report I just received?" the gothic doctor questioned with her iconic monotone voice, red gaze locked on the sheepish coworker, who was trembling and stuttering more than usual, perhaps bracing themselves to feel the wrath of the Head of Kit Outreach. The nurse swallowed, hoping to untie the knot in their throat.
"W-W-Well...! I-It looks l-like o-one of t-the kits was s-screaming and r-running around l-like a mad folk... U-Unsettling t-the blighted p-patients..."
"Which kit?"
"A-A light t-tan one... with f-four a-arms, v-very slim t-tail... v-very rodent-"
"Ratt Damon..." Monday said in a not so subtle mutter. While her posture and face could indicate she was calm, only those who really how how the doctor functioned could tell she was displeased, if not enraged... Which she was.
"The Moontouched patient is already stable, so go keep an eye on them"
"W-Where a-are you going...?"
"To finish what I started before you interrupted me this morning"
She didn't waste any time, her footing was firm and steady, anyone that laid eyes on her could see how graceful her phase was, a dignified doctor. Her eyes scanned each door plate, looking for the #706.
708...
707...
"Here it is... 706"
Monday knocked on the door, softly. "Ratt Damon. It's Dr. Addams, I'm coming in". She grabbed the doorknob, giving it a gentle twist but-
"..."
It's locked. Monday let out a sigh as she looked in her apron for a pack of keys, each labeled with a door number. It's not the first nor the last time a patient would lock themselves inside their rooms. Monday was always prepared for this time of situations after all. With the door unlocked, she tried again. She grabbed the door knob, gave it a gentle twist and push-
"..."
She pushed again, but the door wont budge.
"... Did he...?"
She pushed again, harder this time. The sound of a heavy furniture screeching against the wooden floor was more than enough for Monday. Ratt was testing the limits of her patience and sadly for the kit; it was running out.
"Have it your way then..." the doctor muttered with poison, snapping her fingers. Said action summoned a massive folk who looked like a mannequin bear. The new arrival looked at Monday in expectation.
"Push the door"
And just like that, the ursine folk pushed the door with little to no effort, making it seem that the drawer that was keeping the door shut was not even there.
"Thank you, Teddy. I'll take it from here" said Monday, now more calm and satisfied with the results. The massive folk nodded and slowly walked away, leaving Monday alone with her patient, she entered the room and noticed Ratt was not there... or more like; he was hiding. Monday took a deep breath, standing in-front of the door, blocking any possibility for the kit to escape the room.
"Ratt Damon... come out of hiding. We need to talk"
The room stood quiet for what it felt to be forever, but Monday didn't move, patiently waiting for the kit to come out.
...
...
...
"It... is safe to come out?" the kit finally asked, his voice was kind of rasp. It came from under the bed.
"Come out, Ratt Damon... It's just me" responded Monday, her eyes fixated on the source of the kit's voice.
Ratt 's nose pocked out of under the bed, sniffing the air to make sure it was safe. It took him a few seconds to come out, but he finally did it.
"H-Hello... M-Miss Monday-"
Monday stared down at the kit, he could feel her disdain which made him squeak and flinch.
"Before I start, I must say that your early behavior was inappropriate. Not only you disturbed the peace of the instalments, but you also disturbed the other patients and worsened their mental state". Her words cut into Ratt like sharp knifes, his eyes started to water as a knot was forming in his throat.
"I-I...!"
"Silence!" Monday commanded and the kit obeyed. "That will be dealt with with Dr. Nightsong later... but I must report to you the status of phylakardia before I get interrupted or sidetracked again, which I wont tolerate anymore"
Ratt felt a cold shudder ran down his spine. Monday was serious and all he could do was nod in agreement. The doctor took a small breath, taking in the moment as if she was choosing her words carefully, but all she cared about was the effectiveness of them.
"First off; I do want to remind you that you are out of danger, Ratt Damon. You are as healthy as can be at the moment... or at least healthier than our blighted patients, however..."
"H-However...?"
"As I was saying before Nurse Bahlentine interrupted us; your phylakardia is in good condition, however, since your body's auto healing was pushed to it's limits, your ether reserves were almost empty... Do you know what that means, Ratt Damon?"
The kit swallowed, nervously, shaking his head. "N-No... I-I dont..."
"You almost died"
Those words stroke him harder than falling off the highest cable of the Den and falling flat on the ground.
"W-What do you mean by-"
"Ratt Damon. You are aware that we, Folk, depend on ether to live and thrive, correct?"
He nodded.
"When a folk is low on ether, the body enters a state of preservation of some sort" She responded, seeing the confusion and terror in the kit's eyes, so she decided to explain further. "What I mean is that... Since you are low on ether, your body is reacting in a way that forces you to save and protect what little it has left... which makes your mind put you in some sort of fight or flight state... Sounds familiar?"
Ratt opened his mouth to respond, but the words didn't come out, however, he remembered how he felt in the hallways. Yes, he is skittish and is afraid of blights, but he has never reacted like that before... Monday continued.
"I believe your little episode was the result of your mind and body asking you to preserve and protect what little ether you have left" she concluded.
Ratt wanted to cry so hard, he could feel his voice bubbling up from deep within, letting out hiccups and sharp breaths, but forced himself to stay calm. "W-Will... I s-s-stay l-like this-" the kit whimpered "F-Forever...?!"
Monday shook her head. "No, Ratt Damon... If you do as told, you might restore all the ether you've lost in due time... But it will be slow..."
"S-So... I-I'll live...?!" he was so glad. He didn't care about anything else, he was able to live.
"But there's something you must keep in mind, Ratt Damon"
"Y-Yes...?"
"Thanks to this... incident. You will not be able to grow up like your peers... You are stunned until your ether reserves are back to normal, which means that you will stay a kit for longer and kits around you will reach adulthood while you're-"
"I... understand..." The kit sobbed, hugging his goober friend for consolation. He wondered how could Monday say such things with such a straight face, then again, she has been doing this for who knows how long. Perhaps she is already desensitized.
"Tomorrow you will start your treatment with Dr. Nightsong."
"D-Dr. N-Nightsong...?"
Monday nodded. "Yes. Dr. Treasure Nightsong will be your therapist and shall assist you in overcoming all type of mental and emotional traumas you might have"
Ratt took a sip of air, blinking off fat tears as his eyebrows knotted in closer, glaring at the doctor.
"T-Then why did you tell me this?! Why did you add more baggage for me to work with?!" he spat, but Dr. Addams didn't responded to his action, she was actually expecting such thing, so she responded accordingly.
"While I am not a professional when it comes to mental health, as the Head of the Kit's Outreach, it is my duty to make sure you kits get whatever help you need to grow strong and healthy... My job is to cure your body and so I did... Dr. Nightsong's is to cure your mind. If I don't tell you about the status of your body, then it would be harder for you to work this matter with Dr. Nightsong"
"D-Doesn't she has a way to make me talk about me almost dying?!"
"She does... however, you are a special case, Ratt Damon. Remember your early episode? It would he hard to Dr. Nightsong to start working with that if you dont understand the situation you are in, which is why I decided to let you know beforehand... You will work with this first, for it is the priority. If your mind is to focused on survival, the stress will affect your body, and I will not let the hard work of the medical staff go to waster, understood?"
"... Y... Yes... Miss Monday..."
"Very well... Any other questions, Ratt Damon?"
The kit shook his head, avoiding Monday's gaze.
"Very well... I shall leave you to rest... And, Ratt Damon..."
Ratt looked up at Monday, who was about to leave the room.
"Yes...?"
"Don't you ever dare lock yourself in this room or any other again, understood?"
"Y-Yes...! Miss Monday...!"
Monday left, gently closing the door, leaving Ratt alone with his pets and thoughts...
He better go rest. Tomorrow will be a long day.
