The Power Ranger redesigns.

A very split divide is on this. Some love it, most people hate it (this is the internet after all) but they all kind of agree that it looks like Iron Man. I think it is way too early to give a final judgement on this, maybe when a trailer debuts I can get a better look at it. I mean I did give Ghostbusters till it's trailer dropped.... Before it became my personal whipping boy.

Or should that be girl in that case?

So let's judge it on this image alone shall we?

I think the first question I have is "What sort of tone does this movie have exactly?" because maybe if I knew that I can understand the suits. If it's a GRIM/DARK/EDGY reboot then sure why not. Look like Bomberman Act Zero if that's what your going for. If it's meant to be light hearted and keeping with the goofy nature of the MMPR series, then I feel these designs have missed the point.

Now I know the obvious remark is "WELL YOU KNOW, THEY HAD SOMETHING SIMILAR BACK IN THE 90'S WITH THE FIRST MOVIE!!" Yeah, and they looked terrible in retrospect. Sure to my 9 year old self it looked great, but as a 30 year old (death awaits) it really hasn't aged well.

Permit me to nitpick.

If you look really closely at the helmets, they're practically identical. I know the old costumes were copy/paste but at least the helmets were different. From the photo provided, it looks like 3 characters, but the remaining two are photoshopped versions of the others. I mean there is no real difference between the Pink/Yellow appearances or the Black/Blue Rangers.

Also, I do love this amusing double standard.

If you say online "Why don't they look like the ones from the 90's" you'll have people like Andre Black Nerd say "Oh it's moving with the times, you have to adapt etc!" yet how long did he bitch and complain about the Michael Bay Turtles? And dare I bring up the Transformers? Feel free to complain about those things, but when it comes to Power Rangers? "TAKE THOSE NOSTAGLIA GOGGLES OFF DAG-NABBIT!"

The description that came with the image is the kind of thesaurs based nonsense, that causes me to ramm a screen writers head into the wall.

Wasn't it aliens that started controversial shit with the Ninja Turtles? All I really got from that is something that sounds like a more poncy and "artsy" version of this.

You know, I would not be surprised if they saw Iron Man 2 and said "let's make that racetrack scene into a MMPR movie!" Fuck man, even I called that armor "The Power Ranger suit" when I saw Iron Man 2. Which is the biggest problem with Hollywood at the moment... Well, one of.

It's chasing trends when it should be setting them. Why would you turn James Bond 007 into a Jason Bourne clone? So why make the Rangers like Iron Man when they're the fucking Power Rangers?

They didn't need translucent lubricant mumbo jumbo from the planet Smeg. They morphed! The clue is in the title plebs. Mighty MORPHIN Power Rangers! It's making things more complicated for the sake of making them complicated. I'm not saying stick to the spandex suits, but why not something akin to Black Panther or Ant-Man's suits? Lightweight material with some funny patterns and a motorcycle helmet.

Fuck man, you know it's bad when Ant-Man looks more like a Power Ranger than the Rangers themselves do.

But that being said. It's not the worst redesign I've ever seen. I think at this point I need to see a trailer. I need to know the tone of this movie. I know that's repeating what I said earlier but it's the truth. If they're going with a very grim take on the franchise, then sure these designs fit. I just feel if you're trying to be faithful to the source material, this is the wrong way to go about it.

Show me a trailer and we'll talk about this some more, for now. All I have is a single image.... and a bad feeling about this.
