Description Before you start flaming the hell out of me, just remember this.  The vampires you know now, the ones that burn in the sunlight, blah, blah, blah, would not be here if it wasn't for the 1922 movie Nosferatu.  That is the first movie to have vampires burning in sunlight.

That's right folks.  Even Bram Stoker's Dracula has scenes where the Count has been seen outside, DURING THE DAY.  Not only the book, but also the 1992 film (watch and read, and you'll know this).  Instead of killing him, the sunlight simply trapped him in whatever form he was in until he got out of the sun.  And, originally, vampires were not only unharmed by the sun, they looked like REGULAR people.  That's right, they didn't sparkle nor burn.  They only became more powerful at night (got all their powers and stuff like that)

So, before you attack people for having vampires in the daylight, then remember that the 'burning in the sunlight' thing has no basis in the actual folk lore.  So...yeah, Stephanie Meyer may have over done it with the sparkles and deathly pale shit, but she wasn't exactly wrong about the vampires not being hurt by sunlight.  If Edward looked more human in the daylight, I might not have looked down on the movie so much...or the books for that matter.

Lol, I was reading some of the older comments.. I see what your saying, Your just using Dracula as an example. You never once said he is the original or anything.

Of what I know (so it may not be accurate) alot of ancient civilizations had vampire like creatures.. of course they were not called vampires..but alot of them acted like vampires. And the ones I read about, Sunlight didn't kill them.

It's a common pop cultural mistake (like Frankenstein being the monster instead of the doctor)

Weren't the earliest incarnations of vamps short,  slightly rotund and looked like rats?

Actually, Dracula wasn't the first vampire story.

It was inspired by Varney the Vampire, Carmilla, and Vlad the Impaler.

In each story the character either rarely or never actually goes outside in the daylight, and is only temporarily outside in the day.

Vampires rely on night, they cannot handle the rays of the sun and such, because it is uncommon to them.

(like when a creature living in a cave for centuries comes out, it is a painful experience and it usually retreats back into its cave, never really getting use to the pain of he light)

Although in the original stories no one bursts into flames, it can be though of as their skin may be to fair, that the light burns to much, like a nearly instant sunburn.

The moon wouldn't affect them because it reflects light but the actual hat and rays aren't as direct or powerful, thus they don't get their skin burnt.

Basing it off of Vlad III was do to his torture methods and myths. He was said to have 40,000 to 100,000+ victims. He used torture as his main style. He was said to feast at a tables surrounded by stakes as he watched countless victims be impaled. Another myth said he would drink or bathe in the blood of his victims.

These, plus other cultural ideas, were the inspiration to Dracula.

Hollywood and such added the blowing up in flames, but then again their is so many cultures with other ideas of Vampires that no one could really know if the "first" or "regional vampires burned"

Although in all histories of Vampires, none have EVER sparkled or been dainty/whiny like in Twilight

They don't burn in the sun or anything of the sort, they're humans just like you and me.

Stoker's Dracula isn't anywhere close to the original vampires, even in the literary sense. But I agree in the general sense that trying to say 'real vampires are x' with such a hugely varied mythology is folly. Real vampires don't exist, they're fictional and will be interpreted in different ways.

Well, of course they're different everywhere, and I didn't say that Dracula was an original vampire, he was just more accurate than some.

Accurate to what though? Most traditional vampires didn't even have fangs. In many cases they were more like sentient ghouls than even Stoker's work.

Did I say he was a traditional vampire?  The stamp isn't even about fangs, it's about vampires not burning in sunlight.

You were talking about Stoker's vampire as it related to mythology. I'm pointing out that Stoker's isn't any less inaccurate to most mythology than Meyers.

Though really, my criticism of Twilight isn't based around how accurate the folklore is, it's based on the poorly constructed characters and prose.

Though I'd also would like to point out this. Vampires in legend varry from culture to culture. The chinese vampires looked basically like corpses and were just a bunch of rotting dead coprses. Others describe the vampire as a deadly beauty. Even in Europe no two vampires are alike. Itally has one with leathery skin.

The ONLY requirement for a vampire is for it to be a creature, non human or previously human, that drinks blood.

They need not even feed upon blood. I have seen Chinese vampires that feed on one's chi instead.

Yah though I consider any blood drinking demon a vampire.

Not all vampires are the same every culture has their own.

I personally just have an issue with vampires sparkling. It takes away the movie monster appeal

Now then if they don't burn up that isn't a bad thing. That just makes the vampire more dangerous.

Damn right, son! BTW, moonlight is just sunlight reflected, so this burning thing is nonsense! Vampires likes darkness!

This is one of the number one reasons why I get annoyed when people make claims about how vampires (or any mythical/folkloric race) are "supposed" be. Other fun facts are that vampires in traditional folklore weren't pale at all, but in fact were usually ruddy, and... gasp... didn't have fangs, either! While it's true that Dracula was described with sharp teeth, the vampiric fangs as we're familiar with them are an invention of Hollywood in order to make them more intimidating.
