I think I used 4 or 5 for the smallest text lol. _{puts space above the text, but ^{puts space below it. Make sure the tags (sup/sub) match and don't forget the / in the end tags.}}

< and > can be displayed with < and > (respectively). Since they're not a real < or >, the tag isn't valid.
