Description For ITGM 240, Information Design for Dynamic Media

Week 1 assignment, not my best work by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a fun little project. I don't feel like the graph is conveying information well, but I think it does succeed in the assignment's goal of displaying all the LATCH principals in action all in one graphic.

The LATCH principal defines the five ways in which a set of data can be organized. LATCH stands for: Location, Alphabetical, Time, Category, and Hierarchy. The graphic to the left, showing the properties of 16 common fonts, employs all five LATCH properties.

The fonts are arranged alphabetically. Their saturation denotes their distance from Switzerland, the home of
Helvetica, taking care of location. Their age is defined by the height of the bar, showing time. Their hue defines the
category the font falls in. Their value shows the number
of faces in the font, displaying a hierarchy.
