Description Henry’s wishing tree

Written by: Erik Schroth

As the morning sun rose over the horizon, Henry the Green engine puffed quaintly into the sheds after another successful run of the flying kipper. “Sleep now, Henry” called his driver, “we have a long freight train to pull later.” Henry was excited.

A few hours passed, Henry was fired up for the days work. He steamed into the yards, where Percy had prepared his long train. Henry then chuffed into Knapford station, where Gordon was waited. Gordon was getting ready to run his express, which carried lots of important passengers. “Just keep you dirty freight away from my passengers” Gordon sniffed. “It’s not dirty!” Henry huffed, “besides, freight is just as important as passengers” but Gordon disagree. “If there wasn’t any important passengers, then who would have use for the freight?” Henry felt glum, he puffed out of the station, think about what Gordon had said.

“Come on, Henry” said his driver, “don’t bother with Gordon, he doesn’t get to enjoy the forest, which is where we’re going, after we deliver this freight.” Henry felt much better after that.

Henry rested by the trees and looked around, he could see a bunch of children sitting by a big tree. “I wonder what those children are doing?” Henry thought. Then Toby puffed by, Henry asked him what the children were doing, “it’s an old wishing tree” Toby puffed, “they say it’s power has no boundaries.” As Toby left, Henry looked back at the tree. “Wishes? Stuff and nonsense” Henry spluttered, “if that tree could grant wishes, then I wish I could pull the express! Although it would never happen” but as Henry chuffed away, he had a strange feeling in the pit of his boiler. “Bah! Stuff and nonsense…”

The next morning, Henry woke up bright and early, his driver had wonderful news, we’re taking the express today, Henry” he smiled. Henry was pleased, although didn’t think anything of the wishing tree.

Henry hadn’t pulled passengers in a long time, so when he backed up to the coaches, the passengers were given a big bump. Along with that, all the food in the buffay flew into the air and landed on the ground. “Sssssshot!” Henry huffed. The big green engine then left the station, “let’s keep things steady, old boy” called his driver.

All threw out the day, Henry was bumping the passengers and being told off. That night, he trundled into the sheds, he felt very sorry. “Don’t worry, Henry” said his driver, “tomorrow is another day, you just needed a good warm up.” Henry tried to look up, but found the express a difficult task.

The next morning, that same thing happened again, he shunted the coaches to hard and threw the passengers for a loop. “Oh ow!” Cried the coaches, “we want Gordon back, we want Gordon back!” They shouted. Henry tried to keep them in order, but it wasn’t much luck.

All threw out the day, Henry was having a miserable time. Engines passed by, they tried to encourage Henry, but it did no good. Henry was cross in the sheds that night, he didn’t want to hunt the passengers anymore, “but how?” He thought, then an idea flew into his funnel.

The next morning, Henry wouldn’t come out from the sheds, he told his driver he didn’t want bang the passengers anymore and that he would stay in the sheds. Eventually, word got to the Fat Controller, “not this again!” He sighed.

He got out of his car and slammed the door, “care to explain, Henry?” The Fat Controller asked. “I’m sorry, sir” moaned Henry, “but I’ve been bumping the passengers and causing damage and I can’t take it anymore.” The Fat Controller sighed, “I know you don’t want to pull the express, Henry, but Gordon can’t pull the express.” Henry looked puzzled, “but why not?” The Fat Controller explained that Gordon was in need of repairs and Henry is the only other engine who was available, Henry felt sorry for Gordon and didn’t want to let him down.

Henry braved out of the shed and remembered his failings from his previous attempts. “Slow and steady” Henry hummed as he back up to the coaches. Henry pulled out of the station, with his thoughts straight. He puffed nicely along the countryside and focused on his pace. Finally, Henry reached Marion station, the passengers were impressed and thanked Henry for a surprisingly smooth ride.

Henry sighed in relief as he puffed back to Tidmouth sheds, there he met up with Gordon. “Thank for taking the express for me, Henry” Gordon complimented. “Driver says I’ll be back to it tomorrow.” Henry beamed with excitement, although he missed the passengers, he would be glad to know his express running days are over…for now.
