Description
Just some random sketching from the past and present.A long time ago, a Disney animator buddy of mine saw my very first sculpture. He tactfully requested that I not sculpt for a while, but rather draw everyday as long as I could. I was a little offended at the time, but knew what he was getting at, so I quit sculpting and drew every day for 3 1/2 years. Then I went back to sculpting and couldn't believe the drastic change in my sculpting skills.
I think too many people put the cart before the horse and don't take the necessary steps in improving their artistic talent. Drawing is the core of all art and it took me a little longer than most to realize that. I try to draw every day no matter what.
Whether it's on an airplane, in a waiting room, on the crapper... it doesn't matter...as long as I'm drawing every day.
My Disney buddy also stressed to me that it doesn't have to be a good or bad drawing, as long as you just put pencil to paper. Some days it's just a few little circles and nothing inspirational, while other days things just seem to flow on to the paper. What a crazy process....
No rhyme or reason as to why I picked these particular ones.
Over the last 10 years I've filled around 11 or 12 hard bound sketch books with a huge variety of drawings that any psychiatrist could have a field day with. Thanks goes to Ronnie Williford for helping me get to where I am today.
Hope you enjoy these few samples...
Ps if you check out ronniewilliford.com you can see what Ronnie Williford is up to these days. He no longer animates for Disney but does a lot of painting and etchings....an incredibly talented dude and a very good friend.

Great sketches. Really really great. Your style has something Disney like too. I would like to see more pages of your sketchbooks. Always inspiring.

Randy, Do you draw mostly from memory, or from reference?

RandyHand In reply to JoelKrecklow [2008-03-01 15:46:33 +0000 UTC]
Hey Joel,
It actually jumps all over the place...
Sometimes if I have an interesting photo to look at I'll use that, but mostly it's just laying down circles, odd shapes, and lines, and then just kind of letting those things turn in to some random subject matter...
A lot of times I don't have a specific thing in mind. It's more just making sure I put something on paper every day....
Take care,
Randy

What a great set of sketches!
That is a really great story you've got there. It speaks to me moreso than usual, because I've been really battling with my confidence in my drawings. I've tried making myself draw every day, but I get so frustrated when I can't get something of quality down.
But I should really just do that anyways, because I really do understand how well that helps.
Anyways! Haha! Hope that rambling wasn't too incoherent.
Thanks for sharing the inspirational story!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you can relate to it! You weren't rambling at all.
I'm the same way...there are just days when I can't put down anything worthwhile but still do it any way.
You are right, about just doing it anyway... You'll be amazed how your skill level goes up by forcing yourself to draw every day...
I hope your teachers are improving as well.
I'm going to add you to my friends list and look forward to seeing what you do next.
Don't let those A$$hole teachers manipulate your creativity in a way that your gut tells you is wrong...
Thanks again!
Take care

I really do have to just make myself do it anyways. That's a good practice, especially when it comes to battling my laziness.
Oh man, let me tell you, I have an *excellent* drawing teacher this semester!! I talked to him about the problems I had last semester, and about how my confidence dropped tenfold. He told me that he'll really work with me to improve, so I'm really looking forward to this semester.
What's really interesting is that the teacher I had problems with hasn't changed in the slightest. Which means that the administration tossed all of our teacher reviews (two classes worth of complaints!!) because they were all too harsh, or she completely disregarded anything anyone said. A few folks in our class then actually talked to her about it, but she waved it off, saying it wasn't her problem, but rather that we just didn't learn anything in other classes. Pretty brave, don't you think?
But I'm really going to try to not take grades so personally. I guess I was more frustrated because I didn't learn anything other than just how much I have a problem with confidence, lol! But things are looking up!
Yay! Thanks so much for the add! I'll try to get some more work up here soon.

It's really hard to draw somedays, but you'll see that when you force yourself no matter what, then it gets to the point where it's habit and you just don't feel right if you don't. To me it's kind of like putting on a seat belt when I drive. You just do it with out thinking about it. It takes a little while to reach that point, but you'll know when you do. That's so cool to hear that about your drawing teacher. Looking forward to hearing how your confidence builds. It will.
Karma will take care of that other teacher...
Well, gotta get back to work. I've been taking little breaks from painting that "Buttocks" the clown. Just picked up the bronze today and am painting all the colors of the rainbow on it. I'm having to match a lot from the photos of Joe dancing in the outfit. Super detailed but I'm real happy with the results. I'm getting professional shots of it on Monday and will post them shortly after...
Thanks for the kind words and great messages!
Keep kicking butt!

Ok, I'm looking forward to getting to that point of it being a second nature. That thought really excites me.........for odd reasons. O_o
Yay! I can't wait to see how that turns out. Especially since it has such a special story to it, seeing a finalized version will be pretty fantastic.
And no, thank YOU for all the kind words and inspiration. It all really helped.

You'll get there before you know it...You'll be amazed at what it does for your confidence, and how you look at things...
yeah, i can't wait to post shots of the clown.
I'm going cross-eyed with the detail though. The pants are checkered with 4 different colors...SMALL checkers...
It's actually kind of relaxing though to do that brainless work sometimes.
Hope to finish tonight or early tomorrow...
Speaking of that, better get back to the paint....

These are very good sketches and you are very lucky to have a friend who worked as an animator for Disney because I have always been told they are the best animators in the world XD. They can most likely draw just about anything however now days with a lot of the 3D animation comming out I don't injoy it as much I prefer the good old hand drawn animation and I really love seeing it whenever Disney comes out with one.
I sketch every day too even though I draw anime I try to draw Disney as well as every day things so I agree it helps though its a slow process. I gess that just leads to the saying "patients is a virtue". Its very clear you have been drawing for many years and it looks like you have achieved a style all your own its not quite Disney but has that kind of feel to me. I did check out your friends wedsite he is really talented.^^

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah, Ronnie's an incredibly talented guy. Between him and Mark Newman (on DA as well) and Jerome Ranft, who is a sculptor for Pixar, I've had some really great inspiration to push myself. It's great that you are sketching every day. People don't realize how important that is. Like you said, being able to patiently let the process evolve is so important too. It doesn't happen overnight. It also helps to never be satisfied with any skill level. No matter what I've sculpted or drawn, I try to tell myself, okay, how can I do this next piece even better. It helps to have people in your life that just blow you away and keep you humble. It makes me realize how far I have to go, but in a good way. It makes me really want to keep improving as an artist and as a person. Thanks again! Best of luck to you with everything!

and these drawings along with a bunch of others is going to be a good place to start. I think it will be fun to refine these and blow them up like you said, and then color them....
I'll keep you posted on the progress of that as well.

Thanks so much! It's always fun to flip through old sketch books for ideas or just to see what particular mood I was in at the time. I started saving every little sketch I did, a very long time ago. Even when I was supposed to be taking notes in college but drew little pictures instead. One of these days I'm going to go through that pile of scraps as well.
Thanks again!

hey that's a pretty interesting story...
I sort of did the opposite 10 years ago and stopped drawing to take up sculpting to better understand form and anatomy so i could better my drawing abilities, but the opposite effect happened and now I suck at drawing.........but that's not to say my sculpting has gotten any better though.....haha
by the way I love you fishes.....both 2d and 3d versions

Yeah, I'm always partial to the fish related things....
Isn't it weird how that creative process works? It seems like you have to blow the dust off certain parts of your creative brain now and then. My problem is that I get impatient and want the end result too soon. Then I take a lot of deep breaths and tell myself, patience you dumb ass and if I listen to myself, it makes me push it a little farther.
Why do we do what we do? I figure I'd go even more insane than I already am if I didn't do something creative.
Take care my friend...

Ballistyc In reply to RandyHand [2008-01-03 23:55:37 +0000 UTC]
We share the same affliction. I too also struggle with being impatient...
I look back at so many of the things I've done in the past and realized how much better they all could've been had I slowed down and spent a little more time on them, but I some how got it in my mind that rushing and finishing the an entire piece within a day was a much better accomplishment than to have a fully realized piece that I could be proud to have made....
This type of impatience (which I guess is a little different than something such as the ability to wait for a bus) is what I believe to be one of the hardest things to learn.........well......at least for me it is.....haha

RandyHand In reply to Ballistyc [2008-01-04 00:27:39 +0000 UTC]
So true. Man, you nailed it too. I'm tempted to re-sculpt quite a few things just because I do the same thing...I think another reason I rush it, is because somehow it's going to be more spontaneous. I think you can rush it to a certain point but then once the basic design and shape etc. is achieved, that's where I need to back off, slow down and put in the required time. On the same note, I don't want to catch myself overworking something as well. Hopefully we'll figure it out in our lifetime's eh?
Take care my friend
