Commentary:
Rider:
Kaela Markey hails from Wyoming in the US. She has been riding since a young age and recently received co-ownership of Luna Light Stables, working alongside her sister Sophia Markey. She has a calculated riding style, often taking the safer route. Kaela has been shooting firearms, including the bow, from a young age. As she shoots today that will hopefully be evident, a nice change of pace from some of the more inexperienced archers here today.
Horse:
Her mare is a fine example of the Alfkak breed. A bay Sabino with the perfect amount of golden highlights, she is glowing under the torch light. Her confirmation is on point-powerful hindquarters, a prominent but not overdone Roman nose, and delicately curled ears make for a very well proportioned Alfkak. She seems to have her thick mane braided today, possibly to keep it out of the way of the arrow and bow for safety reasons. She has a powerful but smooth canter and is responding well to her rider. This mare is going to be a formidable opponent.
Theme:
The pairs theme is based on the Roman goddess Diana, also known as Artemis. A modified toga like shirt and a moon painted onto Kaela Markey's helmet gives her an ancient-slash-chic vibe. A deerskin adorned with traditional tassels and golden chains adorns the mare, along with a traditional bridle with golden reins and a perfectly placed jewel.

Story:
The moon was shining down on the perfectly clear night. It was day three of the Alfkak event. Torches burned on the rustic wall. Firelight filled the soft sand arena. Multiple targets were already filled with arrows-arrows that had hit the ground were removed after each round to ensure safety. Back at the starting point, the torch light lit up a golden-tinted mare and her rider.
A deerskin saddle rested on the bays back. A blue jewel sparked on her face. Her rider wore a shimmering cream toga and a painted helmet. Golden chains accented the pair beautifully.
Kaela let out a deep breath. She adjusted her quiver, full of grey and white feathered arrows. Her shiny silver bow glinted under the stars. The mare pawed underneath her, anxious to take off.
When the starting bell sounded, the mare jumped forwards, leaving Kaela grasping at her reins. Within seconds she had readjusted and was drawing her first arrow, approaching the cyclops target first. She drew back and released, the arrow sinking into the blading red eye. The grey and white fletching stuck out inches from the target. Applying pressure with her left leg, the mare turned away and veered from the stone wall at the last minute. A fine spray of sand flew up.
Circling the mare, she readjusted herself. The deerskin saddle was incredibly slippery, something she should have probably checked. She nocked another arrow as they approached the next target, a mid-height traditional bullseye. The target was placed in the center of the arena, shadowed under the dark night. Kaela drew the string back and sighted the middle of the target. She held her breath, remebering her father's advice as a young child, and released the arrow. It flew true and stuck the middle of the target. She threw up a fist in victory as her and her mare thundered on further into the target filled arena.
A dust cloud rose up behind the pair as they approached a target placed on the ground. Adjusting the mare, Kaela veered closer to the target. Bending down, her arrow hit the edge of the target, only feet from the mares hooves. The big bay spooked, taking off at a wild gallop. Kaela lurched to the side, clinging to the braided mane. The thick black curls were the only thing keeping her from falling off.
"Hey, hey, whoa girl, whooooaaa," she whisper-shouted. The mare flicked an ear back but didn't slow down. Kaela untangled one of her hands and grabbed onto the thin golden reins. She pulled back, still unsettled and not steady on the mares back. The big bay slowly settled, her wild gallop slowing and then breaking into a trot. She settled back to a walk and finally came to a standstill. Kaela sighed and adjusted herself back to a normal seat. She turned the mare back to the course and asked for a slow canter. The mare apprehensively jolted into an awkward canter. Kaela circled her, easing her back into a smooth gait.
They pair headed back into the arena with a new air of determination and grit. These two were going to be unstoppable.
