Description

During my hiatus, I’ve been on a bit of a narrow gauge kick lately and I have been looking forward to doing a collage on Peter Sam next. (How appropriate know we are in Saint Patrick’s Month)

Duncan is still my favorite narrow gauge engine, but Peter Sam is probably second to him and honestly a pretty underrated character. People often give the love to the likes of Skarloey, Rusty, etc and while they are fine characters, Peter Sam deserves more. He’s such a wholesome character and almost reminds me of a narrow gauge version of Percy in a way and like many characters, had quite the journey. From losing his old home to finding new life on the SKR, losing his funnel to gaining a new special one that they were actually consistent with. Season 4 alone was a large one for him (hence why over half the pictures are from that season) His interactions with certain characters like Duke and Skarloey are honestly quite wholesome. The former he can be cheeky with and I honestly wish we got more interactions with the latter. In a way, Skarloey is like a second father to Peter Sam. Also, Sir Handel and Peter Sam are like brothers in a way. A yin and yang and are opposites of each other. Peter Sam really felt like the main character of Season 4. (the narrow gauge portion at least)

I honestly have to say that Peter Sam was probably the only narrow gauge character who had an actually good episode in Season 7. Most of the narrow gauge episodes that season sucked, but his episode was pleasant and served as a good sequel after he accidentally left the refreshment lady behind by making up with her and helping her find a place to sell refreshments. It’s just a pity that in Season 9-12, he (of course) became out of character. While not as severe as the likes of Skarloey or even Rusty, Peter Sam for some reason became rather negative and easily agitated. (Did he swap minds with Sir Handel or something?) I’m just glad he returned to his friendly, cheerful self when he returned in CGI. In fact, “Don’t Bother Victor” from Season 16 was honestly not too bad looking back. It’s not good, (he is an idiot there) but at least he is sort of in proper character there with trying to help others and at least unlike most of the narrow gauge engines in CGI, he got an episode.

Overall, Peter Sam is a character who deserves more love is someone I think many should look up to because of his kind nature. He might be somewhat naive, but has a heart of gold. The Skarloey Railway would not be the same without him. In fact, this video by Thomas Theorist explaining why Peter Sam is his favorite character overall is a good character analysis and I do agree with him on it. Go check it out if you can.
