"Fight"ing Autism? Isn't that like "Fight"ing race or "Fight"ing religion? It's like picking out a particular aspect of a person, isolating it, and wiping it clean out of existence.

There are different ways of looking at the word "fight." I dont think it was anyones intent to change the actual person. In fact I know the guy who helped create this book, his son is autistic, and i know he loves his son more than anything. I know many people with autistic children, and as a nurse I have taken care of them. Fact is, parents of autistic children, depending on the severity of the autism, often have a very difficult time. They are in need of support services. Some parents can not handle it and these children end up in group homes. Any project promoting awareness should be commended. Anyone who would like to read up on Autism Spectrum Disorders can do so here... [link]

1. I drew the cover, and provided artwork for silent auction to promote autism awareness. I didn't create the "phrase", nor did I put it on there, and I wish people would stop focusing on that particular aspect.
2. The person that put this project together, did it solely because his son is autistic, and at the time, there was little known about it, and certainly wasn't enough information, nor support network to help those with autistic children. Therefore to PROMOTE AUTISM AWARENESS, if you had read the actual description, you would have seen this.

Fight Autism?
Autism isn't a disease!
It's a change in a person, not a sickness.
Why should you fight it if it's so rare?
Only about 6 out of 1,000 people are autistic, and guess what: I'm one of them!
I think it's down right insulting that you would want to change someone.
What about those people who accept that they're autistic?
They don't want a cure, and we don't need one!

I kind of agree with you here, I don't see why it's presented as a disease here.
I have PDDNOS , I have special education and I'm not bothered the slightest bit by my autism, because people aren't all arms up about it around me , they mainly leave me be, and that works for me.
it's great if people want to help people with autism, but then don't put it like it;s an illness.
it's just the way someone is.

No its not an "illness" but it is a "disorder." thus the term "pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified." Rantz contributed some of the art, he didnt word the book, so attacking him over the wording is rediculous. Im willing to bet it was no one's intent to change anyone but promote awareness to people that are unaware of the challenges that people with autism and their families face. if all of you are so accepting of who you are, why the big chip on your shoulders. Instead of criticizing the artist who had nothing to do with the wording, go out and educate the public. nothing regarding this book was done with malicious intent toward those with autism. also, this book was done, what, five years ago? im sure we, as a culture, have much more knowledge on the topic now, than we had in 2006.

You know, not very artists have ever done this, at least publicly.
I think you've done the one thing most can't, you have touched peoples hearts.
In fact, I am one of them. My brother struggles through autism every day, and sometimes I can't help but feel upset with the world and its view on special needs children. This, though slightly old, is proof that the world does care. Even if it isn't the whole world.
You have my respect and admiration.

Thank you - and I am glad that it has touched you. My best friends son was the inspiration behind this. After we published this, we then noticed other people start to get involved....at least I noticed it more anyway.
I do hope that they can find the root cause to this, at least some of them, so it can be prevented in the future.

What you did was very very very sweet, I am autistic myself and enjoy seeing it when people make artwork about our strange and complex minds.
I really love how you drew this as well. It is a good representation of the subject and the colors are very nice. Automatic fave!

I didn't write it. I provided some interior artwork, as well as the cover. I was compelled to contribute, because my best friends (the guy that put this together) son is autistic, and the reason behind promoting awareness for this disease.

rantz, I know you have good intentions, but can you change the word 'fight' for something else?
ill tell you why:
a project to help fight black people, to find a cure for black skin.
a project to help fight homosexuals, to find a cure for homosexuality.
I dont think I need to give you another example.
how about doing something against autism discrimination? we are not disease infected. we are born this way and were not wrong because who we are. we dont want to be like you, it doesnt matter that you want us to be like you. the more we observe normal people the more we are proud to be not like them.

rantz In reply to canoro [2006-11-14 17:51:00 +0000 UTC]
I can not change the cover wording - I did not write it, only drew the cover image, and contributed a couple other images within the book as well. To clarify, it's not a "fight" AGAINST austic people at all. On the contrary, its more to promote awareness, and to help those in need. The title is not meant to "offend", at all, and if it is portrayed as such, I apologize on behalf of the creative team behind this.

I followed the link. The charity really has me feeling sorta passively emotional (?! ). Two of my own brothers have been diagnosed with autism, so I definitely know what it's like to be in a family in need of support. Personally I think the best thing right now is ABA therapy. While it's not supposed to give parents the hope of a complete recovery, it did help my brothers learn to talk, go to school, interact, etc...
Man, what a beautiful racket you got going on here! I hope it gets all the detention it deserves, and then some. If I can help out in any way, I'll let you know.
Oh, and, by the way, this is a great pic!

Thanks for the kind words. Well, the intent is to raise awareness, not so much to find a cure. But everyone deserves a fighting chance, ya know?
No racket - this is on the up and up....otherwise I wouldn't be a part of it.
