Description Some of you have asked me for some type of tutorial - as I don't have a LOT of time to go into a lot of detail, I thought I would show the basic steps that I do, when creating a new character. Every artist approaches this different, and has steps that they are comfortable with - which works for them. This is the process that "I" go through. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Find what you are comfortable doing, and continue with that - this is just another option to try.

Step 1: Create a base sketch, showing the basic stance, and shape of the character that you are creating. As you can see, this is merely blocking in place holders. These place holders will be changed many times, throughout the design process.

Step 2: add a little more definition to the character - giving it mass.

Step 3: roughing in some basic details - again these are merely place holders, that can be tweaked as you finalize your design.

The next phase we we will clean up the pencils, and define the character in more detail, and add muscle tone, clothing folds, and give the character more depth.

....to be continued........

what would you recommend is the best way to get anatomy down? It just doesn't click with me and I feel that my lack of understanding of it is what is really holding me back. What was it that made it click for you?

a great reference for anatomy is a book called: Drawing cutting edge anatomy by Christopher Hart

OHHHHH AHHHHH! Light dawns on my marble head.

Had a new Canuck whiskey from Ontario at new years and...... damn is it good. Depending on your preference... some say its better than Crown 8-o

Its called 40 Creek and you should try to import yourself some... by the case of course

very interesting, and very nice from you to have posted this tutorial. Anyway, I agree with you, every artist have a different way to approach drawing, and asking tutorial to every "experimented artist" is not a solution. And i'm sure these "experimented artists" have never asked any tutorial.
But in any way, it's always interesting how artists on dA consider drawing !

MShades [2009-01-12 10:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you make it sound so easy.... Make sure you add, "And do this again and again and again" to your instructions. That's the vital part, I think. *smile*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rantz In reply to MShades [2009-01-13 03:54:14 +0000 UTC]

but it IS easy....after hours, and hours, and hours, and hours of scribbling on anything and everything within reach

MShades In reply to rantz [2009-01-13 12:59:36 +0000 UTC]

thanks - only took a couple decades to get that style thingy down.
