Description Another paleoart I did earlier this month in between projects. These are asiatic Tyrannosaurid species Tarbosaurus/ Tyrannosaurus Bataar and Alioramus altai with alioramus being depicted scavenging on an unattended kill (a Deinocheirus).Okay, Back to work -_-

I just wish to see what a tyrannosaurus descendant looked like following the evolutionary trends over its species history(more and more differentiated teeth larger more forward facing eyes and other things)

Though this is possible, it would most likely have to be done in between tarbosaurus feeding breaks.

For example, jackals may scavenge on a lion's or leopard'sΒ kill. But -as I am aware of- never dare (or at least very rarely)Β to scavenge while the lion or leopard is still eating over or too close to the carcass. This is because the larger predator would have a much greater chance of catching the jackal and turning it into the next meal; or at least fatally or severely woundΒ the smaller scavenger.Β
The fear of losing their own lives over scraps or for a quick bite was likely too great for even these small tyrannosaurs to dare try scavenge the carcassΒ while the much deadlier tarbosaurus was still over the kill.

Well, the Tarbo's treathening roar implies it just came back to its meal reccently. The description states the Deinocheirus was unattended at the moment the smaller theropods came.

Oh great. Now we got tyrannosaurs with grizzly bear lips! Now we need to get them to drag their tails like kangaroos and add some rednecks with hunting rifles and banjos! Seriously, have the folks from Toronto been taking too much inspiration from outdated reconstructions from the 1950's?

I apologize. I just don't see any reason why T-Rex should be having bear-like lips. And besides, its obvious that dinosaurs are more related to birds and crocodiles than mammals or lizards or snakes. We have proof of dinosaurs with feathers. Perhaps predatory dinosaurs were so evolved they did not need such lips. I got links with birds with teeth. The T-Rex having lips may just be speculation.

It's okay, I think I freaked out a bit. I just left a heated row somewhere in the Youtube comments sections, so I was feeling irked

Anyway, as far as I know, there's no evidence to support T. rex having lips or not having lips. Such soft structures would decompose if they did exist. As for their lips being bear-like, that could just be explained as convergent evolution. Ultimately, I think this falls under artistic license.Β

GeneralHelghast In reply to TheWarOfTheRing [2016-05-29 03:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I doubt the real T-Rex even needed lips. They would make it ridiculous. Lol.

Corallianassa In reply to GeneralHelghast [2016-10-02 18:41:37 +0000 UTC]

Dude, the fact it would make it ridiculous in your opinion, does not degrade the scientific value.
It has foramina so it at least had some lips.
How big? that's speculation.

Tyrannosaurs likely had thin enamel, so they would have needed lips. I believe lizard-like lips are more likely, although mammalian lips aren't impossible. Crocs don't have lips because their scales are keratinized (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). Those birds don't have lips because they're pseudo-teeth, which are just extensions of the beak. Most modern animals that have teeth actually have lips. Its more than likely they had lips. I believe that Saurian's rex's lips are the most accurate.

Google Saurian rex and you'll see what I mean.

Also, the lips research done in Toronto has problems comparing lizards to dinosaurs and they're obviously didn't realize that dinosaurs are more closely related to birds and crocs, not lizards.

GeneralHelghast In reply to TheTerritorialTrike [2016-05-29 15:06:31 +0000 UTC]

I see it myself and already the Tyrannosaurus looks like a dog-bear-bird hybrid. I don't mind if the T-Rex is feathered, but the lips may just be wild speculation. Evolution suggests that dinosaurs are more related to birds and crocodiles than lizards or snakes or mammals. I an writing a science fiction novel and I already feel pressure from the Smilodon lip theory ( another theory that is possibly being wildly speculated) that is pressuring me to re-write my book all over again.Β

For one the study done at Toronto doesn't just say that T. rex was related to squamates so that Tyrannosaurus must of had lips. It says that Tyrannosaurus (Please note that the species depicted here is Tarbosaurus, because it is depicted with long-snouted Tyrannosaurs, which are only known from Asia, where Tarbosaurus is endemic to. Tarbosaurus might even be a species of Tyrannosaurus, and, even if it's not, it would still be a Tyrannosaurine.) had thin enamel, which means that to protect its teeth from decay, it would have to have lips. If it didn't its enamel would rot and then it's teeth. Anyways, even if there wasn't evidence for lips, it wouldn't be wild speculation, because they would certainly help. They would protect it when it wasn't using it, in case it brushed up against a tree, for example, it wouldn't lose teeth. Phylogeny has its limits, and birds, again aren't the greatest thing to compare Tyrannosaurus, because bird's teeth are just projections from its beak. Crocodiles and alligators aren't the best comparison either because they have pressure sensors on their snout which would mean that the lips would get in the way (Sorry, when I said that Crocodilomorphs didn't have lips because their skulls are keratinized I believe I was wrong. I say "I believe" because I can't find good sources why Crocodilomorphs don't have lips).

P.S. I actually agree that the idea that Smilodon had lips is a bit far fetched because their teeth extend so far below the bottom jaw.
