Well im pretty much just a beginner myself but maybe theres something..
What i thought was ground breaking considering oil painting (though its just a basic thing) for me was how much you can do in the beginning with paint thinned with damarliquid and turpentine.
(id be happy to tell more)
also its good to not go into details right away.

Those must be some crazy-ass dreams.
I have sketched different Cthulhu's dozens of times and none have ever been scary enough for me, so I know what you mean. Regardless of what you think about your work's scare-level, it's very well done. I especially like the murkiness of the colors - it gives it a deep underwater feel.
