After finishing his breakfast, he was prepared to do his fair share of chores around the house but Mara was ten steps ahead of him. The living room and kitchen were spotless. He crept down the stairs and out the door into the pasture where Mara was petting their half-mane Tokota, Collin. The sheep were busy mowing down the grass outside of their fence.
“Are we expecting a visit from Aippaq or something?”
Mara cocked her head to the side with a chortle, “What are you on about?”
“I can still pull my weight around here, you know.”
“I give you a day to sit on your butt and you’re still complaining?” Mara chuckled, “I figured you needed a break.”
“It’s our anniversary, it’s your break, too!”
Collin greeted Neo with a rub against his head, chuffing excitedly.
“Hey, boy!” Neo scratched behind Collin’s big ol’ floppy ears, the Tokota panting happily in response. “Are you pulling your weight around here, too, bud?”
The old Tokota padded off in the direction of the sheep, but fell short. He opted to sit in the grass, staring out into the distance longingly. The hill where the sheep roamed and the pen where they slept used to occupy more than just Collin. It’s been a few years now and it’s never felt the same, even with the new normal. They were everything to Neo… They had talks of getting another Tokota but…would they fill that void? Neo’s smile faltered.
Mara read the expression on her husband’s face. “Poor guy’s so lonely…” She sighed, a little too dramatically.
Neo raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile creeping over his face, “Ohh, so that’s what this is about?” He crossed his arms and tilted his head.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” She said as flatly as she could manage, barely stifling a laugh. The gig was up.
“Maraaaa,” he nagged, giving her shoulders a few playful shakes.
Her barely held together facade crumbled at the sight, “OKAY, okay I have a surprise for you! Your daughter and I have been looking for months and…it just felt right…” She cupped his face with her hand, “We need some more life around here.”
Neo placed his hand on top of hers and genuinely smiled, “I’m excited to meet him.”

For the next couple hours, Neo sat in anticipation in the barn. The sheep were safely in their pen for the afternoon so he could spend that agonizing wait with Collin. The old Tokota laid his head on Neo’s lap, sensing his excitement and worry. What if this puppy wasn’t “the one”? Nothing could replace River or Dash.
Neo stroked Collin’s mane, “You’re going to have a new friend, Collin.” The barn cat, Silly, came up and brushed against his leg, “You, too, Silly. I’m sure he’ll love you two.”
“NEO!” Mara came running toward the barn, “Neo, they’re here, they’re HERE!!” She was practically shaking with enthusiasm. Quickly, she snatched his arm and started dragging him out of the barn and the both of them erupted in laughter.
“Whoa whoa, I can walk, you know!!”
“NO PEEKING!” She cupped her other hand over his eyes.
She led him through the pasture closer to the house, Collin and Silly in tow. He could hear a car door slam; Bella’s truck. Immediately, Collin sniffed excitedly, his tail knocking into Neo’s head.
“Mooom, what’re you doing to dad??”
“Get that puppy or I’m gonna blow!!” Mara hurried her daughter, having to hold back from jumping up and down.
The truck’s door on the other side opened…and then slammed shut. Neo grinned. Mara clenched her hand tighter around his face. She gasped and started cooing like she had just seen her newborn baby for the first time. She slapped her side with her other hand.
“I’m handing him to you, dad, be careful.”
A soft, fuzzy shape melted into his arms. At that moment, he felt like he was floating among the clouds, brimming with so much joy that he could take on the world. He was giggling like he was 50 years younger about to tear open a birthday gift.
“Ready?” He could hear the giddy anticipation from his daughter.
“Hit me!!” His wife’s hand fell from his face and in his arms sat the cutest Tokota puppy he had ever seen. He had the biggest eyes, one blue and one brown, and the sweetest face. His body was covered in brown merle patches and he had black feet with a few white toes. He didn’t expect to have missed the smell of puppy breath. He stared up at the stranger with pure love, reaching up to coat his chin with kisses. That was all it took for him to burst into tears.
“I love him. Thank you,” his voice cracked, laughing and sobbing all at the same time. Mara and Bella hugged him. “You guys are the best.”
“Happy Anniversary, sweetie,” Mara kissed his cheek.
“I don’t think you’re topping this one!”
“Well, have you thought of a name?” Bella asked.
The little merle puppy sat comfortably in the man’s arms, happily staring into his new owner’s eyes. Collin came up beside him, sticking his nose as close as he could without breaching the puppy’s space. His tail wagged and a youth he hadn’t seen in the old Tokota in years was ignited yet again. In that moment, he knew he was the right one for him. For both of them.
“Zoeyn. My Little Zee.”
