I thought of a name for this AU: Fate Aversion. Both Gaster and Sans ended up averting one fate worse than death, only to be stuck in another.

I picture it going down like this:
Sans and Gaster were at the Core and Gaster was about to fall in, but Sans pushed him out of the way, causing Sans to fall into the 'Void'. Now Gaster lives with a heck of a lot of guilt and tries to cope with it with dad jokes and puns.

well gaster sort of knows about sans and the void but it's pretty hazy. Sometimes the memories get so foggy that he questions if sans did actually exist in the first place
