Description I may not have my complex model finished yet,

but this low-polygon model which i origionally planned on importing into UT-2004 is just about finished other than the fingers wont move properly yet (hence the stiff fingers)

again, this is a LOW-POLY model
the details will be a bit chunky-er so it wont be as smooth as usual (because i had to delete and re-shape thousands of polys)

anyway! ^.=.^

please tell me what you think! all critique is welcome!

(and yes btw that IS a DragonForce logo on his shirt)

Very cool. May I ask how you did the wings? I use 3Ds Max as well and have been itching to make a dragon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to SilverDrgnbane [2008-01-23 00:40:56 +0000 UTC]

hmm... the wings were pretty dam complicated to model

lets see if i can explain...

first i extruded the fingers, from there i extended faces off of the sides of those fingers, before finally collapsing the verticies so even though they all met at one point, there was still membrane in between the fingers.

one thing to make SURE to do is to make the wings 2 sided so there has to be a space on the edge for a polygon to fit in between,

from there you just cut faces out and remove any uneeded lines, shape for what you want the wings to be, and thats pretty much it... i doubt this will help you at all unless i were to go more in debth but right now this is the best i can do

hope this helped ^.=.^

np

just keep in mind a lot of the time there ISNT a "right" way to do it, i usually just come up with solutions as i go along!
~but getting help from others is rly nice too

no problem ^_^ i my self am going into 3D animation and i love seeing other people's work

I also watched your movie too. its very cool ^_^

i've been wanting to model a dragon but i always end up messing up or creating something else XD the closest thing to a dragon i have made is my lizard model XP

Rashoni In reply to TV-QueenMaster [2008-01-23 00:19:31 +0000 UTC]

ooh, cool ^.=.^

heh, thanks, i worked rly hard on it

now about modeling, the best way to get better is to experement, i didnt have any real modeling instruction, i just went at it
tutorials MIGHT help, but they only show you ONE possible way to do it

dont give up and keep trying different methods of modeling, find the one that suits you ^.=.^

yeah i'll keep at it

RiceGnat [2008-01-22 20:26:26 +0000 UTC]

Pretty nice, it doesn't have as much of the boxy look low poly models usually end up with. What modeler do you use?

DragonForce WOO!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to RiceGnat [2008-01-22 21:33:48 +0000 UTC]

lol thanks ^.=.^

i use 3D Studio Max version 9

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Pyritie [2008-01-22 15:50:16 +0000 UTC]

You could lose a couple of polies on his toes and hands. Remember, the detail is in the texture, not the model

Like the yellow blobs on his nose should just be texture, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to Pyritie [2008-01-22 20:06:44 +0000 UTC]

uh huh, good point ^.=.^

BUT

since i havent figured out how to custom-texturize this model, that doesnt rly apply

and ive deleted enough polys to be under the limit so i think its unnecessary to take away more =\

thanks for your opinion though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pyritie In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-22 20:19:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... what program are you using? Maybe I could show you how to add textures...

There's a limit?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to Pyritie [2008-01-22 21:39:50 +0000 UTC]

I use 3D Studio Max 9

and in order for it to run in UT2004 the limit is somewhere around 6000 polys

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pyritie In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-22 21:52:11 +0000 UTC]

Ah, haven't used that one. I use gmax though, which is an older version of 3ds max that was supposed to be a free version. The program was later dropped. But it's still free.

And 6k polies? Well I model for warcraft 3, and even a model with 1000 polies is considered to be high-poly

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to Pyritie [2008-01-22 22:18:24 +0000 UTC]

lol, well im just going by what a friend told me of how he did it

my complex model has well over 100,000 polys

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pyritie In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-22 22:29:10 +0000 UTC]

That's a lot of polies.

First you add an Unwrap UVW modifier on the object. Then the unwrapping thingy should just be in the Material Manager and then you go to File System, then you click and drag the texture on the model. Then you go onto the unwrap uvw and wrap it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to Pyritie [2008-01-22 22:47:45 +0000 UTC]

i know all of that

im talking about that kinda stuff where you actually MAKE the texture like SKIN and such so that the whole model isnt the same uniform texture, like different patterns of scales on different parts or like the underside of the arms gradually gets darker... that kinda stuff you need like PhotoShop or something to make it so that the different patterns and textures blend into each other

THAT kinda texturizing

but thanks for trying to help

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pyritie In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-22 23:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, making the actual texture

Thought you were talking about the unwrapping part.

DARIX [2008-01-21 01:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Sweet! You did alot with a low poly count, you should be able to get this to render super fast in any DirectX or OpenGl game.
Those wings are awesome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to DARIX [2008-01-21 01:30:00 +0000 UTC]

heh, thanks ^.=.^

i managed to get the poly count below 6000 (a LOT harder than i expected )
the wings were RLY hard to make look decent with minimum faces XP thanks again!

although he IS pretty much finished on this level

glad you like the feet though they look even better on the normal model

KillingSpree In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-21 23:10:23 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome :B

Well yeah... but I mean all smoothed out and such D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rashoni In reply to KillingSpree [2008-01-22 01:11:36 +0000 UTC]

this is as smoothed as its going to get

if i were to smooth it out it wouldnt by a low-poly model and would actualy multiply the number of faces XP

but my OTHER model will DEFINETLY look more smooth

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KillingSpree In reply to Rashoni [2008-01-22 04:30:53 +0000 UTC]

If that's smooth, I dunno what is!
*pets*
Oh wait, yes i do 8D
