Description This is a map of about what we know about the political layout of Azeroth at the moment. Some are a bit outdated, but this is the last thing we know about those locations. If I got anything wrong, please let me know.

I don't get it. I'm not a WOW player, although I've played WC 1, 2 and 3, and have extensively read the lore.

From what I see here, the Horde seems to hold more territory. So why, then, is it implied and sometimes outright stated, that the Alliance as a whole is considered slightly more powerful in-story?

The new expansion kind of started off with rather little information. What they have said is that both sides are more or less equally matched at the moment. (This map was made before BFA and I haven't checked out all the new lore from its launch) I am not sure where it says the Alliance is slightly more powerful in the current story. In Classic wow up until cata the Alliance did have a slight advantage over the Horde, however, during cata the Horde has the advantage. (Here is a video from when cata came out about the flip in the balance of power. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3PIer… ) Before BFA the Horde pushes out the last major Alliance presences from Kalimdor, which makes them the Dominate power in the area. They also just happen to have allied with most of the factions in the South Seas and around the Maelstrom. This gives them a Territorial advantage as far as spread. However, the Alliance has more of a dominant hold on the Sothern half but is contesting (and last I heard winning) the northern half. The new pvp map is in The Arathi Highlands. So, the Alliance is still trying to push up into the northern half. So, I think that the Alliance are going to have a big pushback (if they haven't already had one) and more even out the balance of power. As again, this is how it stood before the lunch of BFA.

I do, however, see the Alliance as clearly more powerful, because of the current climate. Clearly, there is a growing schism between the rather genocidal Forsaken, and the more honorable Orcs, Tauren and Trolls, with the Blood Elves being rather aloof and removed.

What I'm saying is that I always felt that the Alliance was more credibly unified, and that the Horde's latest atrocity has weakened the Horde's unity while strengthening the Alliance's. It's easier to rally people to your cause when you're reacting to an atrocity than when you're the one causing it. Lore-wise, narrative-wise, the Alliance should have the advantage.

Still, it IS ultimately moot. As long as there's money to be made, both sides will be doomed into a constant stalemate, no matter how it affects the lore.
