Description
Many years ago, I created a fan race for MLP:FIM! I decided to update the image and the description in light of the movie that came out a year or so ago. If you'd like to see the originals, let me know. The pony modeled in color above is named Sweet Shell!
Aquinies, Pinnaquis, and Shellhorns
Before the time of Seaquestria and the hippogriffs-turned-seaponies, the aquinies were the most pony-like creature in the ocean depths! Rare to behold, aquinies and their kin stick mostly to uninhabited bays and grottoes. They are shy around other species, but are just as playful and intelligent as their above-water cousins!
Though 'aquiny' can reference any of the three varieties of ocean-dwelling ponies, they each have a counterpart to the pony types you know and love! Aquiny refers to the earth pony equivalent, pinnaqui are the pegasus equivalent, and shellhorns are the unicorn equivalent! You can see the physical variations in the uncolored parts of the image above. Aquinies are covered in small, soft scales (like a snake!) that are difficult to see unless you're up close. No hair or fur here!
Aquinies lack back legs, nostrils, and hair! Instead, they have back fins, gills (straight and ending in a spiral shape; visible in two of the images above), and ridge fins and a tail! Their ears also have delicate fins curled inside that poke out! The fins on the aquinies are all semi-transparent and glossy, and an aquiny's eyes are shinier and more reflective due to an extra lens that keeps them protected! Their cutie marks are turned on their side and can be found near the base of their necks, just past their front legs. The cutie mark presents on both sides of the spine.
The fins and tails of the aquinies are quite varied. Some may have two or even three ridge fins (the fins starting from the head and going down the back), and the tails may take many different shapes. Length is also a factor! That being said, the ear fins and back 'leg' fins are generally the same length from aquiny to aquiny, but that's not to say differences don't exist at all. As mentioned above, you won't find any hair on these pony cousins, though some of the aquinies 'style' their fins by bending them in all sorts of directions!
Shellhorns can use magic, just like unicorns, and pinnaquis' extra wing-like fins are used for extra speed and maneuverability! They can also use them to get extra air when leaping out of the water.
Aquinies cannot breathe out of water without magic, and they aren't very good at moving around outside of the water. Aquinies are comfortable in both salt and fresh water!

Im writing a comic/story about the future of the show (Info and characters here [link] ), using the world depicted in [link] , and there is going to be a part in an atlantis type world, based on fantasy utopias depicted in the 50's, and it will be populated by sea ponies, or, if you dont mind, Aquinies.

Also, I was thinking of a way to make them have a form of hair, i was thinking that the atlantian ponies cultivated coral for hair, a form of symbiotic relationship. and of course, ridges too

I like the idea of a utopia underwater, of course, a fifties style utopia means men stay in the kitchen, where they belong.
What would you call an alicorn aquiny?

xDD I'd probably say I'd call them an Aquicorn, just off the top of my head. If I get the chance to think it over any more and I change my mind though, I'll let you know :3

I'll take "interesting" in a good way xDD
Hippocampi used to be one of my favorite creatures in D&D when I was little, and since I'm now into ponies, I wanted a pony version of them~
