Part One
“The Leaking Sphere.”
Deep in the underground a bunker was built into a building few knew about and even fewer dared to go to. Inside this place Jinx and Vi worked away. This was their sanctuary and a pace far from any that might come after them.
The top level was Vi’s training area where she honed her muscles and fighting skills. Jinx had built her a custom punching bag. It was made of steel and synthetic fabrics, not only able to take great hits but even give a few back. Vi was working on her bare fists, striking on the softer targets with her wrapped fists. She moved and dodged, her strikes lashing out with deadly precision. Her asymmetrical red hair bobbed around as she moved. She was dressed in a tight grey top and long black pants. Her bare feet pattered around as she moved around, dodging the bag in its simulate battle rotations.
In the lower area was Jinx’s workshop. It was a chaotic space with salvages parts, munitions and all sorts of dangerous things. She was tinkering, inventing, and messing around and lost in her own little world. She wore a small black halter top and striped pants with clunky combat boots. Her long blue hair was braided and fell behind her, swaying around as she worked. She had just gained a few new crates of salvage from one of her sources and though she started out with inventory, it led to her taking things apart and experimenting. Several of the crates were open, their contents spilling out onto the floor.
One such crate seemed to be filled with metal spheres. They were about a foot and a half across and had no label on them. Jinx had taken one out when she raided the crates and one fell to the floor. She was so engrossed with her work that she didn’t notice it start to leak. Before long there was a sizable puddle on the floor of sickly greenish brown liquid. Jinx looked back at it and lifted her goggles. She waited a few seconds for the telltale sizzle or popping of acid or explosives but as the puddle stopped moving and didn’t seem to be in any danger of affecting the lab she shrugged and turned back to the pieces that caught her attention on the workbench.
“Jinx are you making a mess down there?” Vi asked between strikes to the bag. “Last thing we need is another beserking robot running around down here.”
“That was one time!” Jinx commented. “And Senior Teethface was delightful.”
“He ate the couch.” Vi replied as she struck the bag again, her battle toughed fist making the inner structure of the bag groan. “We still need to find another one.”
“There are a lot of couches down here.” Jinx replied, not looking up from her work. “Go out and grab one.”
“The one we had was…relatively clean.” Vi replied with a laugh. “The ones out there are…less so.”
Jinx nodded, realising she had seen one that was moving, from the inside. “I suppose I can build us one. I have all of the components around her. I make bombs that run to their targets, I’m sure I can build a couch.”
“Well, I’ll help.” Vi said as she turned off the punching bag and leapt over the rail to join Jinx in her workshop.”
“Careful of the puddle on the floor.” Jinx said but as she heard a pair of splat sounds she realised her warning was a few seconds too late.”
“What the hell is this?” Vi asked as she looked down at the puddle which her feet had managed to land in the center of. Her face contorted to one of disgust as she looked to Jinx. “This better not be acid!”
“Do you feel any burning?” Jinx asked, still focused on the task ahead of her and not Vi behind her.
Vi looked down at her feet, wiggling her bare toes in the gunk. “No burning.”
“Then it’s not acid.” Jinx explained. “There’s a towel over by the stairs, try not to track too much of it around when you go get it.
“Good idea.” Vi commented. “Last thing we need is a trail of this stuff around…whatever it is.”
Jinx continued her work on the component on her worktable. She heard Vi making sounds behind her and wondered what else she was going to mess with. Though the workshop was a mess it was Jinx’s mess and she had it right how she liked it. “You gonna grab that towel or what?”
“Slight problem.” Vi admitted. “I can’t.”
“It’s on the railing by the stairs!” Jinx commented in an annoyed tone, still not looking back. “I can’t believe you cant find it.”
“Oh I can see where it is.” Vi admitted. “I just am having issues getting to is.”
“It’s not that messy down here.” Jinx snapped. “Just go get it.”
“That is the problem.” Vi admitted. “I cant fucking move!”
Jinx looked up from her work, lifting her goggles from her head but not turning around. “What do you mean you can’t move?”
“This stuff…UNGH.” Vi said in a frustrated tone. “It’s like glue or something. I’m completely stuck!”
“Oh yeah some crap leaked from those spheres.” Jinx said as she went to pull her goggles back down. “Just take off your boots I’ll clean it up later.”
Vi sighed. “That would be a great idea…if I was wearing any. I am in this stuff barefoot.”
“Oh!” Jinx replied finally turning from her workbench. “That is really not good.”
Jinx quickly moved to Vi’s side to investigate the situation. Vi had both of her bare feet in the puddle and was coated from the ends of her toes to the bottom of her heels. The goop had completely coated her soles and was climbing up between her toes. Even her arches were stuck, gooped by the splash of when her bare feet landed in the puddle.
“Any idea what this stuff even is?” Vi asked. “Is it glue?”
“It would appear so.” Jinx said as she examined the glue. “No need to worry as long as we get you out of it before this crap sets. Try to get out so I can see if I can find a weakness.”
“Got it!” Vi said as she grabbed a tight hold on one of her legs just above the knee. She yanked hard as her other foot stabilized her body. Slowly the heel of her foot came up, trailing the rubbery glue that was connected to the floor. Vi was putting on considerable effort, the act of stretching the stuff clearly not an easy task. Her arch came up, the balls of her feet came up and soon the toes came up as well. The stretchy glue trailed tightly, not sagging or bending, a straight link from foot to floor. Vi was strong and managed to get her foot several inches from the floor. Eventually the stretched glue locked like a chain, refusing to let her lift any more. Vi grunted as she tugged on it, unable to gain even a millimetre more stretch. “This is it, as far as it gives me.”
Jinx examined the glue, taking out a small knife out and scratching it against the stretched glue. Though it looked like rubber it as more like Teflon, the knife barely gaining purchase and hat contact it made left not even a scratch. Eventually the glue quivered and reeled back it’s victim, slamming Vi’s foot back to the floor with a resounding SMACK. Vi winced in pain for a moment from the shock and sudden pain.
“This is serious shit.” Jinx commented. “It’s seemingly designed to keep someone completely immobile.”
“Well it has done that.” Vi said as she alternated foot to foot, stretching at the glue and having her feet snap back precisely in place. “I can’t even take a little step, it locks me back up where I started.”
“I got some ideas.” Jinx said as she brought over a device with a winch and pneumatic arm. She attached a strap to Vi’s leg and wound it up to her calf. She hit a button and the device pulled her leg up and stretched the glue at her feet. Even with all of the added strength the glue only stretched as far as it did before. Jinx put as much force as she thought Vi could take but gained no more advantage against the glue.
“Can we rip the skin on the bottom of my feet off?” Vi said. “Would hurt like hell but at least I’d be free.”
“Not gonna work.” Jinx admitted. “This stiff is too high up on your feet and is coating too much. Also I think this stuff might be deeper than your top layer of your skin.”
“So the only way to free me is to break it or undo it?” Vi asked.
“It’s unbreakable.” Jinx said as she examined the glue with a device. “No matter how much pressure you use to pull it the glue exerts that same pressure back. We’d tear you apart beyond repair and this stuff would still be intact.”
“Then what do we do?” Vi asked. “This hurts you know!”
Jinx went to her workbench and grabbed several things. She worked to put them together before revealing a machine powered cutting device. “This has incredible cutting strength and diamond edges. This can cut through anything!”
“I knew you could get me out of this!” Vi said hopefully. “Cut me loose!”
Jinx brought the cutting device over to the stretched glue. She activated a button and the diamond scissors closed, pressing into the glue. She expected it to cut immediately but once it got to the glue it stopped. The engine of the device groaned and smoke began to leak out. “Come on you stupid glue…CUT!” However the machine only struggled further eventually snapping, sending the pieces of the claw off in different directions.
“What the hell?” Jinx shouted. “This stuff in insane!”
“Try something else.” Vi suggested as she focused on dealing with the pain and pressure exerted on her foot. “Anything just get this stuff off of me!”
Jinx went around her workshop gathering tools to try and break or cut the glue. She got a saw meant to cut through the hardest crystal but as she applied it to the glue it just spun until the glue dulled the blades down to nubs. She used a blowtorch on it and not only did it not cut the glue but seemed to not even heat up at all. She hooked up a high powered cutting laser and focused it on one spot of the glue. She left it for several minutes but when she turned it off saw that no mark was left on the glue. She tried every machine or tool she thought would work but one by one they either broke or failed.
As Jinx searched for something else to try the arm holding Vi’s leg up began to strip, leaving the glue to reclaim the foot and snap it back to the floor.
“Dammit that one hurt!” Vi commented. “What are we going to try next?”
“I have no idea.” Jinx admitted. “Nothing even dented that stuff.”
“There’s got to be something.” Vi commented as she again tried to move but was immediately reminded how tightly she was imprisoned. “Can we cut up the floor or something?”
“The floor here is reinforced permacrete.” Jinx commented. “And where you are stuck is load baring. We’d bring the building down long before we cut you loose. And even if we did you’d have a massive permacrete slab underfoot.”
“Maybe we can use glue remover?” Vi suggested. “We can’t break it, maybe we can dissolve it.”
Jinx nodded and went to work, mixing chemicals together and applying them to the glue. With each attempt Vi had hope and tried to step free, however one by one the concoctions failed and left Vi with her feet still tightly stuck.
“None of the solvents are having any effect.” Jinx commented. “This crap is set and locked to you.”
“Keep trying.” Vi insisted. “Surely there has to be some chemical that will undo this shit.”
Days passed as Jinx mixed chemicals and tried different solutions. There seemed to be nothing that could so much as effect the stuff. Vi struggled to stay in good spirits, each attempt leaving her exactly in the same spot as she was before. Jinx took care of her as best she could, helping her with hygiene, food and other things. She even set up the punching bag closer to her but Vi found it incredibly challenging to fight it now that she could not move in any direction.
Jinx worked for another few days, out of glue solvents to try and working on something more powerful. She eventually succeeded and dressed in protective gear as she drew the stuff into an applicator.
“So what is this stuff?” Vi asked, clearly afraid to get her hopes up again. “What are my chances this time?”
“This is the most powerful acid I can make.” Jinx explained as she carefully brought the device closer to Vi and activated the repaired pneumatic arm to stretch the glue once again. “This stuff is so strong I need a specific type of material just to contain it. It should be able to eat through almost anything.”
“What if it cant eat through this stuff?” Vi asked, afraid for the answer.
“That your glue is permanent.” Jinx admitted. “If acid cant dissolve it you are standing in permanent glue.”
“Well let’s hope then.” Vi commented. “That this is what finally does it.”
Jinx nodded and carefully knelt by the stretched glue. She began to apply the acid and at first there was a an encouraging sizzle. Both girls were excited but it was soon dashed as she acid burned away leaving the glue perfectly intact. Jinx looked up to Vi, an apologetic look on her face. “I’m sorry Vi, nothing I can do or make can free you from this stuff.”
“There has to be some way.” Vi said as the pneumatic arm lowered her foot, preventing a painful smack. “Maybe we can find the people who made it, maybe there’s like an antidote to this crap.”
“I think that is the only thing we can do.” Jinx admitted. “Because if there is no glue antidote you are going to be in that stuff forever. This is all my fault. If I was more carful with the salvage you would still be free.”
“I don’t blame you.” Vi commented, trying desperately to keep her spirits up. “I know you will find the antidote and find out how to get me out of this stuff.”
“I will do it!” Jinx said in an encouraging tone. I am going to start to search for information on who made this stuff.”
“I’m terrified that there might be more of this stuff out there.” Vi commented. “Who knows who else is stuck in this stuff.”
“I’ll get to the bottom of this I promise!” Jinx commented as she got ready to begin her search. “I’ll get you out and make sure no one else gets stuck in it!”
“I believe in you.” Vi said as she watched her sister head out on her mission. She wished she could go with her, could help her but knew for the time being and foreseeable future she was all but helpless.”
