Chapter Three:
“Watch what you step in.”
Near nightfall both groups of fox girls finally reached the ruin. It was not much on the surface, consisting of several buildings that had slowly been worn down and reclaimed by nature. All paths lead to a large stone area before a massive arched door. The groups were relived to see each other and greeted their friends eagerly.
“Were here.” Mango said excitedly as she moved forward and hugged her best friend, Rikki. “I was starting to worry that there was no ruin, just a path forever.”
“Me too.” Rikki admitted. “If I am being honest.”
“How was your path?” Leeka sad as she walked up to Shina and embraced her, taking hold of her forearms with both hands. “We found a fox trapped in the mud; we were unable to free her.”
“Similar to yours it seems.” Shina replied with a sigh. “A member of another group was trapped impossibly in a petrified tree. “We had to leave her behind.”
“The perils of this place seem to start even before you reach the ruin.” Leeka admitted. “You have discovered you cant go back?”
“Oh yeah.” Chex replied as she looked down at her feet. “Seems we can go back and forth on this slab.”
“I can jump!” Alexandra added, enjoying that her feet could now leave the stone. “Were free!”
“Yeah but we still cant go back.” Lian said as she gestured toward the paths. Everyone turned to see that the stone on both paths their feet had crossed mere moments ago now sank back into the swamp and forest. “The paths have disappeared.”
“Just perfect.” Rina commented as she strained to see if she could see any sign of the path. “Can’t walk through the mud, I don’t suppose you can walk off the path in the forest.”
“I would strongly advise against it.” Titanya admitted.
“Well then forward is the only way to go.” Leeka commented. “We are here to solve the riddle of this ruin are we not?”
“There is no door.” Drell commented as she approached the arched doorway. “Just an open doorway. Do we just go in?”
“From what I have heard the locked doors are within.” Titanya responded gruffly. “You need to figure out how to open each door to the next room.”
“How many people have gotten in deeply?” Chex asked, seemingly excited. “How many doors in?”
“No one knows.” Titanya answered. “No one has ever come back from the dungeon before. “They are presumably still in there or dead.”
“That is what we are here to find out.” Leeka added proudly. “I chose each one of you for your skills and abilities and we will unlock the mystery of this dungeon.”
“Yeah!” Rikki called out in an excited tone.
One by one the foxes walked through the big stone door into the dungeon, glow stones lighting up to reveal a door beyond. As the last of the foxes entered the door slowly opened.
“We go in!” Leeka commanded. “Be careful and keep your eyes open.
The group slowly entered the room, the door beginning to close behind them. Several of the foxes poised as if they were going to try and block the door or rush back through it.
“Let is close.” Leeka commanded. “The dungeon has rules, and the next door might not open until we solve the next room.
The door slid to a stop and locked leaving the group in a large well lit stone room. Drell walked to the other side and examined the door.
“It's pickable.” Drell said proudly, will just take a moment to open.
The second Drell’s tools touched the lock a strange floating blob of liquid descended from a hole in the ceiling. It moved at Leeka who dodged as the blob streaked past her. Titanya drew her sword and slashed at the blob, but it split in half around the weapon and reformed, narrowly missing the fox. The blob swirled and attacked at each fox, getting closer and closer each time.
“Hurry up Drell!” Leeka called out. “This thing is getting better!”
The sphere moved at Alani, coming in low. Alani smiled, knowing she could easily jump away, her legs were massively strong. As the blob came close, she leapt to the side, but her eyes went wide as the bob dodged with her striking the ground next to her, spilling out into a puddle on the floor. Alani was in mid air and could not stop, her feet smacking into the wet liquid.
“Alani!” Rikki called out. “Are you ok?”
Alani froze in place and looked around, seemingly expecting to be in pain or catch fire. “I seem...ok. I think it missed what it was going to do when it hit the floor. Were ok!”
“Good.” Leeka responded. “How is the door coming Drell?”
“Done!” Drell said proudly as the door opened to reveal a hallway beyond.
“Ok we move on.” Leeka commanded. “Let's not wait for another blob.”
Everyone began to move forward save one, Alani went to walk but instead just lurched in place.
“What the?” Alani said in confusion. “I'm stuck!”
“Stuck?” Leeka responded. “Explain.”
Alani looked down and focused on moving one of her feet, the appendage lifting with great effort of the ground barely two inches before violently slapping back to the floor.
“That blob that hit the floor...” Alani explained. “Was made of glue, and I stepped in it with both feet!”
“Can you break free?” Rikki asked concerned.
“Yeah, just take a sec.” Alani said in a confident tone as she tried again to move her feet, the glue stretching with her foot, thousands of tiny glue tendrils coming up with her sole and toes. She strained and grabbed her leg with her hands and tugged, gaining no more distance from the floor. She grunted as the glue won the tug of war and slammed her foot back in place with a loud snapping sound. Again, and again Alani tried, lunging forward, pulling on her legs with all her strength but each time the glue just stretched the two inches before snapping either of her feet back in exactly the same place they had started from. Rikki slid down to the ground and examined the situation. The glue seemed almost invisible when Alani stood still the strands hidden under the soles of the large fox.
“Try again!” Rikki asked. “I wanna see how much headway you make each time you pull!”
Alani nodded and grabbed her lower thigh and yanked as she tired to step forward. As Rikki watched the foot started to come up, Alanis bare heel gaining slight distance from the floor followed by the rest of her foot. Rikki scanned for any strands breaking and damage or headway against the glue. To her surprise she saw not even one strand break, each holding tight to the girl’s foot, securing it to the spot on the floor it started from. Before long Alani lost her grip and the foot snapped back down, exactly back where it started.
“Not even one strand broke!” Rikki said as she looked up at Alani. “Your not getting free at all.”
“I could use some help.” Alani reluctantly said to the other. “I am giving all that I have but I can't break free.”
“Combine your strength!” Leeka commanded and Titanya and Chex took places beside Alani, careful to keep their feet outside the perimeter of the puddle and grabbed tight holds on Alanis legs. The three worked together, grunting with effort, sweat forming on their faces as they strained. Again, the foot came up, stretched the two inches but locked again, refusing to raise any further. The girls fought with all they could, their bodies straining, but eventually the glue won out and slammed the foot back to the floor.
“She's really stuck!” Titanya said, slightly out of breath. “This stuff doesn’t budge!”
“I'm getting kinda concerned.” Alani admitted. “This stuff is really serious shit.”
“Don't worry we are gonna get you free.” Leeka explained calmly. “Rina and Lian plug that hole. The rest of you take out rope and make a pully over that rafter. Were gonna combine all of our strength and pull Alani up out of the glue.”
The foxes went to work, plugging the hole the goo came from and affixing the rope over the rafter. The rope was tied as a kind of harness around Alanis chest and every other fox grabbed a hold and got a good grip. Leeka counted the three and all the foxes pulled with all their strength, Alani helping by gripping the ropes and pulling. The glue groaned and stretched but as it hit the two-inch stretch stopped cold, it would not give her feet another millimetre from the spot at the floor reserved for the girls’ bare feet. The group pulled and pulled, Alani fighting through the pain but neither the glue nor her skin would give way. Eventually the group let go, Alani’s feet taking their place again on the floor with two cracking snaps.
“I am fucking STUCK!” Alani said in a frustrated tone. “This glue is ridiculous.”
“There is a way to get you unstuck and we will find it!” Leeka reassured.
“I'm open to ideas.” Alani replied. “Because all mine result in being snapped back.”
“I'm gonna try and cut it.” Rikki said as she laid down at Alani’s feet. “My blade is tipped with synthetic Rethalium I will cut this shit!”
“You set my feet free I'll love you forever.” Alani replied. “Name your reward and it's yours.”
“I'll think of something.” Rikki replied. “Raise your foot and hold it as long as you can, I’ll start cutting strands.” Rikki began to saw at one of the strands, thinking of spicy things she might demand Alani to do. She focused on her task but still admiring the round heel and sexy skin of the trapped fox.
“Get the door open.” Leeka said gesturing to the door they had come through. “We might need to get more supplies and help if we cant free Alani.
“We kinda can't.” Drell responded. “There’s no lock on this side of the door we came in. “We can't go back, were stuck.”
“No I'M stuck!” Alani replied.
“Sorry poor choice of words.” Drell apologised. “But we have to go forward we cannot go back.”
“It’s just like the other girls.” Alexandra admitted. We can’t free them, and we can’t go back for help.”
“I can't hold my foot up.” Alani said. “I gotta let it snap.”
“Go ahead.” Rikki said with a sigh as she watched Alanis pretty foot slam back in place with the usual snap.
“How many strands were you able to cut?” Leeka said looking down to Rikki.
“None.” Rikki admitted. “The strands wont cut, they seem indestructible.”
“Indestructible???” Alani scoffed. “I'm stuck in indestructible glue?”
“Calm down Alani.” Leeka said in a reassuring tone. “That just means we cant force it to release your soles. We need to find another way. Riffen I need you to make some universal solvent, skip the weak stuff and make the strongest.”
“It will take some time.” Riffen said with a nod. “And use a lot of my resources.”
“Start working on it.” Leeka explained. “We will exhaust every other option, but we might need the stuff to set Alani free.”
Riffen nodded and started to work mixing chemicals together in a parge vile.
“Lian can you use your magic to set her loose.” Leeka asked.
“Of course, I can.” Lian answered. “But I am not putting my feet anywhere near that glue.”
“It's not sticky anymore.” Rikki commented. “I accidentally touched it with my sleave. The stuff is dry and set onto Alani.”
“If you are so sure out a foot in it.” Lian suggested. “If I see it not stick to you soles il risk mine.”
Rikki nodded and stood up. She nodded and lofted her small pale foot, she set it confidently on the edge of the puddle. She smiled as she lifted her foot the glue having no effect on her soft sole.
“Not stuck.” Rikki said proudly.
“So it's just me then?” Alani said in an annoyed tone. “Can we get back to the topic of setting my feet free?”
“Of course.” Lian said as she stepped into the radius of the puddle, wiggling her toes to confirm they were in fact not stuck. Lian crouched and focused magic through her long fingers into the glue stands. “Stretch for me please.”
Alani nodded and stretched at the glue as hard as she could, Titanya and Chex again pulled the ropes to help. Alani strained, the obvious exertions beginning to show, sweat glistening in her underarms and dripping down her sides. Lian grunted and focused her attention, beams of energy flowing into the glue, the strands began to light up but suddenly went dark. Alani sighed as her foot snapped back into place.
“The glue absorbs magic.” Lian said as she stood. “It's advanced, any magic we cast will only make it's hold stronger.”
“Can you teleport her out?” Leeka asked.
“Teleportation magic doesn't work like that.” Lian explained. “This glue has one hell of a hold on Alani’s feet and there’s no way to form a teleportation field around her that can differentiate her feet from the glue. The spell will auto fail.”
“Ok new plan, cut at the floor.” Leeka commanded. Lian use magic, Chex and Titanya cut it. We cant get her unglued we take part of the floor with us.”
“That wont be possible.” Rina jumped in. “The floor is made of Dulstone. It would take months with construction tools just to scratch it.
“I'm not gonna lie.” Alani responded. “I'm feeling really concerned about this.”
“Well you can relax.” Riffen said as she stood up. “Universal solvent is done. This stuff is MADE to undo impossible glue.”
“You are my hero.” Alani responded. “I can't stand being locked up in this shit any longer.”
“This can unstick anything.” Riffen said as she crouched and started to pour the solvent around Alani’s feet. Instantly the stuff began to bubble and flow under the stuck fox girl’s soles.
“Ungh it feels so weird.” Alani said, gritting her teeth.
“It's devouring the glue let it work.” Riffen pleaded.
Seconds later the fizzing stopped, and Alani sighed in relief.
“Ok step out.” Riffen said proudly. “I'm sure you will enjoy being able to move again.”
Alani nodded and went to take a step, her eyes going wide as she simply lurched, her heels coming up before snapping back to the floor.
“Fuck!” Alani cried. “I'm still stuck!”
“That isn't possible!” Riffen said as she crouched and examined the glue. “The solvent had absolutely no effect!”
“Pull!” Leeka shouted. “Maybe it weakened it!”
Chex and Titania pulled again, combined with Alani's strength they fought the glue. Alani’s feet stretched at the sticky strands the two-inch limit withholding as every single strand still held firm. The trio pulled and pulled but eventually had to relinquish their strength and let the glue snap Alani’s feet back to the floor.
“Ok.” Alani said, a hint of desperation in her voice. “Just um, make up a stronger solvent.”
“There is no stronger solvent.” Riffen admitted. “That is the most powerful glue solvent ever invented. If that stuff couldn’t damage this glue, I have no idea what even wood. If I had a chance to take it back and study it maybe...but nothing we can make with existing alchemy can dissolve the glue.”
“Come on there has to be something.” Alani pleaded. “Please get me out of this shit I seriously am about to freak out.”
“Lian summon some fire.” Leeka ordered. “It absorbs magic but maybe heat will make it loosen.”
“I am fire element.” Alani replied eagerly. “I am immune to fire so cook this shit off of my feet!”
Lian nodded and summoned a hot fireball, careful to keep it away from the strands themselves she made it as hot as she could, the fire sphere becoming white hot.
“Lets rip her free!” Titanya shouted as she and the others began to pull on the ropes to pull Alani out of the glue. As the heat grew hotter and hotter the others strained. The room grew hotter and hotter but the sticky strands refused to be affected, staying as strong as they ever were.
“Freeze it!” Alani called out, straining to keep her feet up from the floor at the two inch length.
Seeing the heat was having no effect on the glue Lian switched gears and focused intense cold from the ball, trying to freeze the strands. The temperature in the room dropped and frost began to gather on the sticky strands. Just when everyone thought it might be working, that the strands might be frozen or brittle the glue asserted itself and snapped Alani's feet back to the floor, completely unaffected.
“For the love of Aegis will nothing get this stuff?” Alani called out in frustration. “I'm fucking fused to this spot!”
“I got an idea.” Drell offered. “Not a good one but it will definitely break you free.”
“I want out of this stuff so bad I’d take anything at this point.” Alani replied. “As long as it results from me getting unstuck.”
“Well I got these little door blowing bombs.” Drell explained. They aren't powerful enough to blow the door here, but they are definitely strong enough to utterly destroy the glue.”
“Wont that hurt Alani's feet?” Rikki asked, concerned.
“She’s a fire element fox demon.” Drell added. “It will hurt but she’s so strong it wont even break the skin. Her healing ability will fix any damage but the glue will def be blown to bits.”
“How do we use them?” Alani asked, desperate to keep trying to get free.
“Well they are quite small.” Drell added as she withdrew the small pinky sized bombs. “You stretch that shit as far as you can, and I'll force three or four of these under each foot between the strands. I set the fuses and seconds later you got two aching but very free feet.”
“I am very cool to try it!” Alani replied. “I'll take the pain if it means I can be without this glue.”
Drell crouched at Alani’s feet as the others pulled. The glue as with every time stretched two inches and Drell went to work forcing the small bombs into small pockets between strands. She lit the fuses on both feet and jumped back, indicating everyone to take cover. The bombs exploded in a blinding flash, filling the room with smoke. Everyone shielded their eyes and waited for the smoke to clear, desperately hoping to see Alani anywhere but the spot she had been standing.
Unfortunately, as the smoke cleared Alani was coughing and lurching forward, her feet still firmly linked to the glue puddle. Drell slid forward and examined the glue, all the bomb pieces were blown away, but the glue still stayed...completely intact.
“No damage!” Drell said. “This stuff truly is indestructible...not one strand released.
“Your kidding me!” Alani responded. “How the fuck am I supposed to get out of this?”
“I have no idea.” Drell replied. “It looks like it's permanent.”
“PERMANENT?” Alani said with a gasp. “You mean my feet are stuck in permanent glue?”
“It is very much looking like it.” Riffen added. “It appears as though it is impossible to free you.”
A range of emotions went over Alani’s face before looking resigned. “I think you are right. I am not going anywhere.”
“Were not leaving you here.” Leeka responded defiantly. “Were going to figure out a way to get you unstuck. Anyone got any more ideas.”
“This shit is designed to get someone stuck and keep them stuck.” Rina added. “Alani's soles are not going to come free from that stuff no matter what we do.”
“I was sloppy and now I’m stuck.” Alani pleaded. “As much as I hate the fact I am stuck the thing is I am...like VERY VERY stuck. The only way I am EVER getting out of this crap is if you guys solve the dungeon and get the antidote to this stuff.”
Leeka sighed. “Is that accurate.”
“Yes.” Riffen added. “This glue is so ridiculously advanced only a specific antidote can set her free. That antidote is her only hope.”
“Go on Leeka.” Alani said as she crossed her arms. “You are jeopardising the mission dwelling on my feet, which are a lost cause.”
“I will return.” Leeka said defiantly. “I will get you out of that shit I promise.”
“I believe you.” Alani replied. “Hurry.”
