Trials of Ukuni
By FOXCARROTS
Part Three
“The Alchemist.”
For Comet and Ukuni, standing in one place was an agony. Though the glue that bonded tightly to the soles of their bare feet did offer some give it did not offer nearly enough. It was like a vice camping to the soles of their feet, bottoms of their heels and the underside of each individual toe. No matter how hard they shifted, how much weight they took off of their feet, the discomfort persisted.
Comet was sitting down, her butt just outside of the small glue puddle, her legs bent, and her feet still smacked down in place in the glue puddle that held her. Ukuni was still standing, looking like she wanted to scurry around and do any number of things, hover her stuck soles prevented her from doing any of them.
“You are just going to sit there?” Ukuni scowled as she looked to Comet. “You should be doing something!”
“What did you have in mind?” Comet said as she looked up to Ukuni, her face neutral as if she was only thinly covering the same frustration Ukuni was suffering. “Do you have some way out of this glue that I don’t know about? Because from the puddle I’m stuck in there seems to be no way out of it.”
“We can’t just give up!” Ukuni growled. “We have to find a way to get our feet free of these accursed glue footprints!”
“We?” Comet asked. “You telling me that if you found a way to get free of the glue you would share it with me?”
Ukuni crossed her arms, not used to someone finding a weakness in her otherwise steel resolve. “You tried to help me get unstuck and got stuck as a result. Even with our…conflict, it would be dishonorable to leave you stuck if…when I become free.”
“That is surprisingly nice of you.” Comet said as she got to her feet, finding the whole process counter intuitive since her feet could not move or shuffle. She stood, stretched and looked to Ukuni. “Ok I’m up…what shall we try next?”
Ukuni went to speak as if it was a simple thing to plan for their escape but it was clear her mind was coming up with nothing at all. They had spent the last four hours fighting with all the strength they had to step out of their glue stuck footprints, yet every attempt, every idea ended with the same thing…their feet smacking back precisely in place. “I am open to any ideas you might have.”
“Well, we can try the ultimate mantra.” Comet suggested. “I don’t know if you learned it before you left the order but it might help.”
“The ultimate mantra?” Ukuni confirmed. “You mean the ultimate meditative mindset that perfectly finds the balance between body and mind said to be able to warp time and space itself? I have heard of it but never mastered it. Have you?”
“No exactly.” Comet admitted. “Though I have tried several times. We cant get out but we could at least try.”
“I will try just about anything.” Ukuni admitted. “Anything is worth getting UN-STUCK!”
Comet nodded. “Ok, well there are many meditative poses but we can’t really get into any of them with our feet linked to this crap like they are. The pose really means nothing. Think of your body, the place you stand and where your mind is. Focus on where it all meets and try to find the energy between reality and mind.”
Both girls stood in their glue puddles, focusing on their bodies and the energies within and around. They both were trained monks, used to tapping into the hidden reserves in the body and becoming entuned with things greater than they were. They just had to focus to push it further to find the power they needed to get out of there terrifyingly sticky situation.
“I can feel strength and power.” Ukuni admitted. “I have never gotten as deep in a mantra before. I feel like I could fight the sun!”
“I do too!” Comet admitted. “We are as close to the perfect mantra as any I have ever known. Focus on this power, focus on this transcendence of being. Come with me Ukuni…let us step free of the glue that seeks to restrict us!”
“I believe!” Ukuni replied. “We WILL step out of this shit!”
Both women moved at once, guiding their bodies to transcend the real and the unreal the here and now and defeat the bond of the glue and walk forward. However, as both stepped forward with one of their feet the glue stretched as it had before, asserting its influence on their tender flesh and allowing them no more stretch than it had ever given them. Just as fast as the feet stepped forward both guls felt themselves pulled back. Both feet unceremoniously snapped back, locking back into the glue as it had done a hundred times before.
“The mantra didn’t work.” Ukuni scowled, her hope and optimism rapidly fading. “Were still stuck!”
Comet sighed and nodded slowly. “Yeah it does not seem that we can meditate ourselves out of this crap.”
“What are you two standing in?” an unfamiliar voice called out from the side. Both rooted girls looked over to find a short curvy girl with blonde hair and violet robes standing before them. She had a round innocent face, fidgety hands and well pedicured feet in elaborate sandals. She was looking at them as if they were creatures in a zoo.
“Never mind what we are standing in!” Ukuni snapped, her default emotion for new people seemingly anger. “We are not here to be gawked at!”
“It’s glue.” Comet explained in a noticeably softer tone than her forced companion. “And given the circumstances we have no power to stop anyone from gawking at us.”
“Glue???” The newcomer said as she stepped forward to get a closer look. “How interesting. I presume you cannot get out?”
“What makes you think we can’t get out?” Ukuni commented as she crossed her arms defiantly. “I never said anything of the sort.”
“Ukuni there is no point in lying about it.” Comet scolded before turning back to the newcomer. “We have been trying as hard as we can but we totally cant get out of this glue. I don’t suppose you can be of any help?”
“My name is Tanis, and I am a master chemist and alchemist!” The newcomer said proudly. “I would be delighted to undo that glue for you!”
“You can undo this shit?” Ukuni said as she stretched a foot up, demonstrating her plight for a few seconds before the foot was snapped back into her glue footprint. “You can set us free?”
“Of course I can!” Tanis replied proudly. “Chemistry is an exact science and alchemy is a powerful tool. It is just a matter of finding out what dissolves your glue and out of it you come.”
“Please undo the glue!” Comet pleaded. “We are so hopeless in this crap!”
“Of course.” Tanis said as she put her hands together. “So what is your budget?”
“Budget?” Ukuni scowled. “You want us to pay you to get us out of this glue?”
Tanis nodded. “Sorry I was not more clear but yes, you will pay me to devise a solvent to free your skin from that glue.”
“How do we not know you didn’t leave this stuff here for us to get stuck in???” Ukuni demanded. “Maybe this is your scam to catch people in glue and sell them the antidote?”
“Seems like a lot of work.” Tanis giggled. “What are the odds I would catch two barefoot women in such small puddles?”
“She’s right.” Comet added. “And shed be selling us a solvent she already had not offering to devise one.”
“Precisely.” Tanis replied. “So we have a deal or what?”
Comet looked to Ukuni who was fuming but seemingly unable to find a solution for their stuck feet that was not paying the newcomer. “As much as it pains us both to admit it we kind of have no choice. I have about a hundred gold coins.”
“I have five hundred.” Ukuni growled. “Undo the glue now…please.”
“Oh that’s not even close to enough.” Tanis said as if the transaction was for a carriage ride and not their freedom. “I am afraid I cannot undo the glue for anything less than double that.”
“You are kidding right?” Comet commented. “We are literally stuck in place, how could we get you more money?”
“Well you could trade for it.” Tanis replied. “What do you have of worth.”
“I have some jewellery.” Comet admitted. “Ukuni how adverse to selling your sword are you?”
“I am a pacifist.” Tanis interrupted before Ukuni could even begin to argue. “I don’t deal in weapons. Your cat gear might fetch a fine price though.”
“Seems fair to me.” Comet commented. “Take it off Ukuni.”
Ukuni went red with shame. “I…can’t.”
“Now’s not the time to be proud.” Comet commented. “We need unglued.”
“You don’t understand.” Ukuni said as she reached up and tugged on her cat hear headband. It flexed and stretched but the ends held to her temples and would not allow itself to be removed from her head. She similarly demonstrated that the belt that held her tail on was locked tight to her hips. “They are cursed and until I can break the curse they are impossible to take off.”
“Show me the whole belt.” Tanis said as she took a step closer to Ukuni. “This is fascinating.”
“It is humiliating!” Ukuni replied, not wanting to meet Tanis’ gaze.
“Show me the whole belt and I’ll take the coins you have and start working on a solvent right here right now.”
Ukuni growled to herself before reaching down and pulling down her pants. She revealed that the belt on her hips was only part of the tail assembly and it went between her legs and up between her ass to connect to the tail and the belt at the back.
“How do you…” Tanis asked, clearly transfixed by the belt. “Like screw with that on.”
“I can’t.” Ukuni admitted. “It’s a chastity belt and it cannot be circumvented.”
“How do you go to the bathroom even?” Tanis asked. “I have so many questions.”
“Solvent now.” Comet interjected as Ukuni followed her lead and pulled her pants back up. Comet took out her coins. “Free us both from the glue and she will answer as many questions as you like.”
“Deal!” Tanis replied. “I’ll have you both out in a jiffy!”
Tanis collected the money and began to take vials and equipment out of her satchel. She crouched by Ukuni’s feet just outside of the puddle. She began to work away, dabbing things onto the puddle to gauge their reaction and try to devise what would and would not work against the glue. Though she had said it would be a jiffy it proved to be much longer. It was late art night, with the main overhead before she had a solvent.
“Well, I will admit that this stuff is resilient.” Tanis explained as she held up a large vial. I had hoped to use a lesser solvent, but the stuff held tight against all of them. This is the most powerful recipe for a universal solvent in the realms. It can unstick just about anything!”
“I can’t wait!” Comet replied. “I want out of this stuff so bad.”
“This goop is torturous to be stuck with.” Ukuni added. “Please use the solvent.”
Tanis nodded and poured a liberal amount of the solvent around Ukuni’s feet and then Comet’s. She then took out a small pocket watch and counted the time. It was like an eternity to the girls in the glue. They could both feel the chemical of the solvent bubbling and cracking, sliding into the places between the strands and doing what it was doing.
"That should do it!” Tanis replied with a proud voice. “Step free of your glue footprints!”
Both women moved at once, so sure of their freedom this time they expected no resistance. However, the resistance was still there. Both girls faces turned from hope to terror as they tried again with their other feet, desperately trying to step out of the glue. However, the sticky strands would not give, the solvent despite fizzing and popping had not even loosened one strand of glue. They had no more stretch, no more give, all four stuck feet were every bit as stuck as they were before it was implied.
“What the actual fuck?” Ukuni demanded. “The solvent didn’t work, were still stuck!”
“Why are we still glued Tanis?” Comet said as she looked at the stunned chemist. “Did you make a mistake with the solvent?”
“No, that is universal solvent.” Tanis replied, her jovial voice replaced with one of shock and shame. “It should have undone it.”
“Well it didn’t!” Ukuni said as she stretched and stomped a glue bound foot in protest. “Why isn’t it coming off?”
“I would have to analyse the components to be sure.” Tanis replied. “but it seems you are both standing in permanent glue.”
“Permanent glue?” Ukuni demanded. “What the hell is permanent glue?”
“Glue that never comes off.” Tanis replied. “It cant be undone by any means known to science.”
“There is such a glue?” Comet asked. “Glue that sticks and never unsticks?”
“Very much so.” Tanis admitted. “And I am afraid you are both standing in it.”
“There has to be something!” Ukuni demanded. “I refuse to admit that I can never be freed from this glue!”
Comet sighed, desperately trying to wrap her mind about the grave news she was just told. “Ok, as much as I hate to do this I must ask you to get help. Someone out there must have a way to get us out of this and we will need them.”
“Well, I didn’t deliver the solvent promised so I will rouse some help.” Tanis admitted, heading off to search for assistance and Ukuni frantically struggled to get free of the glue. She was inconsolable and determined to fight with all the strength she had left despite the odds against her. Comet sat back down, knowing that she could do nothing. She could only stare at her feet, locked in lace and hope beyond hope that she would some day find a way to move them again.
