For their next edition D&D is moving away from bioesentialism. That's probably a good thing, especially for a setting like DungeonFist. Having a player's real-life race be the sole factor in determine their digital avatar's stat bonuses seems extremely racist. Moving stat bonuses to be entirely based on background seems like a bit of an over correction, however. For DungeonFist we decided to split the difference. When creating their characters in DungeonFist each race, class, and background has two associated stats. Players may select any 3 of these associated stats gaining a +1 bonus to the selected stat. A player's race can be a factor in their in-game stats but it's far from the only factor. A player's race can give them a slight edge in certain roles, but those that wish to play against racial stereotypes can do so without feeling sub-optimal. ...So basically we just copied Pathfinder 2E.
