He mercilessly slaughters them in cold blood and then he gives them a decent burial? Is he honorable or just a really tidy dragon?

I'm pretty sure that still counted as self defense. They WERE trying to rob him at knifepoint.

Maybe, but Spike was the one who drew first blood.Β He could've easily disarmed them all without any real trouble or bloodshed. I wouldn't even have much trouble with it if Spike was forced to kill just a couple of them. They were starting to lose their fighting spirit. One even attempted to flee.
But instead he killed them all without any hint of mercy. Even worse when you realize that these were not ordinary thieves. They were rebels. Β

Eh you have a point on killing the fleeing one. However, I don't agree with holding it against Spike that he drew first blood. They were actively threatening his life if he didn't give up his bits. You don't wait for someone to stab you before you defend yourself. That results in unnecessary injury that could prevent you from defending yourself against further attack. Not to mention Spike warns them twice to leave him alone or he would retaliate and the final response was to point a spear towards his throat. They said they're not bandits but they sure weren't heroes.

Itβs true that you donβt wait for someone to stab you. But provoking them to attack is no better. Spike didnβt need to kill the first one. Disarming him wouldβve been enough. A show of strenght you shouldnβt mess with. When he killed their comrade, he provoked a response to avenge him.
Itβs only when one of them tried to backstab Spike on his metal wing, that killing in self-defense felt necessary. Things escalated. Everything else felt more like overkill, and made Spike look more like a villain than a victim.
I only hope these ponies werenβt just punk kids trying to act tough.
