Description

Faebruary day 9
Hobgoblin

The Hobgoblin is the more mischievous cousin of the brownie, both are said to live in peoples homes and do chores around the house. Hob is an old English word for elf, but hob is also the name of the hot metal plate upon which most cooking was done in English homes for centuries, the hobgoblin has been re-imagined in dozens of roles in modern fiction, even the great Tolkien cast him as a hulking goblin/orc warrior, but it is quite likely that a hob-goblin is quite literally a creature of the hearth.

Hobgoblins are usually small, loathsome, easily offended and love to cause trouble, but in Scotland they are also said to be reliable when truly needed and in Wales they are said to fear clergymen and detest teetotallers.

Hobgoblins where clearly another source of inspiration for JK Rowlings house elf character, in fact Lancashire hobgoblins are called dobbies, a dobby is often a relentless prankster who follows a family from house to house making their life difficult, sounds familiar…

Don’t forget to leave out the cream.
