Description
A lot of people asked for one so...why not?
Please excuse any grammar/spelling errors ;u; I did this late at night.
This is for environments, but tbh it can be applied to characters and objects too. It's a little harder with characters. I might do a tutorial on how I do them another time, but for now have this.Β
I hope it helps.
Edit: Thank you for the DD! Im answering a few questions I think i can help with, but also Thank you to every commenter! Im really happy it appears to have helped some people.

It allows the brush to be more transparent when you press lightly, and more opaque when you press hard. Not sure what V of PS you have, but this is where it is for meΒ gyazo.com/598bb74dcfa853be5fc3β¦
Hope this helps : )

I wish I had Photoshop to practice this sort of thing, but I get the feeling this would work well in SAI, too. I need a lot of practice when working with backgrounds (especially natural ones) because I'm so used to planning out the way someone/something looks down to their nitty-gritty details, so this would force me to work outside of my comfort zone -- and that's a good thing! Thanks for making this tutorial -- as soon as I can fix my dear tablet, I'll be sure to try this out.

I just tried it on SAI and while the tiny little nit picky parts are different, it can basically be applied to that program too, yes : )
Good luck!

I've tried a similar tutorial a couple of times, but it never worked for me. I just never see any interesting 3d shapes in the blobs of color, which makes me extra-impressed with people who do.

I find blurring my eyes sometimes helps me see it. Good practice to do it is cloud watching. I know it sounds strange but it really helps you see shapes that arent there. Like looking for little shapes in clouds or stars, its really good practice for your eyes.

I've been trying to practice doing environmental works, but find my colours are pretty 'fake' when I try to do them cause its all done grayscale first and colour overlayed because I am unsure how to work with colour... this is such a neat little package of advice for people like me who want to not produce full detailed works yet, but get some of the basics down pat in composition and colour This is awesome thankyou for the helpful tutorial!

Another good thing for working out colours is find a photo with a colour scheme you like, and make a palette from that. The colour picker is your friend! Eventually once you do it enough your eye knows what colours to go for without needing the reference.

As a person who used to post a bunch of speed paintings (but temporarily stopped submitting them due to some issues that happened with my old account), I have to say that while your approach is certainly a bit different, I still think this is a GREAT tutorial.Β I'll try to experiment with this, just because I think it's a wonderfully interesting approach to do so. Β Just the idea of starting off with random, soft spots of color (with some color theory in mind, of course) and then building upon it that way is intriguing and tempting to try on its own.
I feel like I missed this tutorial somehow (in spite at looking through your gallery occasionally), but thank you for sharing this fairly recent (or old?) tutorial anyway!

RattledMachine In reply to Gallant-Art [2014-07-07 05:26:15 +0000 UTC]
Definitely give it a go. I wouldn't use it for a rendered piece because its still not as reliable as really thinking out your composition and colours, but its a great exercise in breaking the tendency to want to detail too soon.Β
Im glad it helped! : )

Sorry for the late reply.
Don't worry. I found it hard at first too. I know it's said all the time but honestly the only way to find it easier is practice. Keep at it and you can do awesome things!
