Description

Our Star Wars role-playing game is set on the planet of Batuu, in Black Spire Outpost. As such, I've been making an effort to build all of the starships which are featured in Disney's Galaxy's Edge attraction. As it turns out, that's a fairly long list of ships. Eight of them are physically present and landed at the outpost: YT-1300, a blue and white T-70 X-Wing, Poe Dameron's black and orange T-70 X-Wing, RZ-2 A-Wing, TIE/sf, TIE Es/Echelon, Sienar-Chall Utilipede, I-TS Inter-system Transport Ship. Four additional ships are featured in associated storylines: Xi-Class Shuttle, Purrgil-class MPO-1400 Starcruiser, the Black Spire Outpost Transport, and finally this little ship, the Launch Pod. I think this last unassuming little ship completes that mission for me, making a total of twelve ships.

The Chandrila Star Line uses sturdy and reliable “Launch Pods” to shuttle guests up from the surface of various planets to its famous Starcruisers and then provide passage back down again.

These launch pods are simple cylindrical vessels piloted by an externally mounted R-series astromech droid. The trips are normally quite short, and so guests must stand, (holding onto handrails), as no seating accommodations are generally provided. Two long overhead windows provide guests with a limited view during their short stay aboard.

Launch pods are propelled by four sub-light engines which direct the plasma exhaust directly downward to provide lift during takeoff and landing. Once aloft, the engine exhausts rotate 90 degrees, directing the exhaust backward to propel the ship forward.

Launch pods are designed with universal docking ports at both ends, bow and stern.

Four retractable landing pads extend from the ventral side for landing.

Despite their small size, and simple accommodations, most CSL launch pods are equipped with a hyperdrive.

While Launch Pods are used to provide passage through a wide variety of alien atmospheres and diverse atmospheric conditions, passengers generally report that their brief rides aboard these vessels to be remarkably smooth, short, and uneventful. This is perhaps a testament to the design of these vessels, the droids who pilot them, and the CSL crews who maintain them.
