Description

I’ve always loved Type-9 Shuttles, but I wanted them to serve in a little more of a "leading role," as opposed to what we’ve seen in various episodes of Star Trek.  So in my headcanon, there is a high-performance variant that has been modified and upgraded to serve as a kind of Starfighter.  I did make a few subtle modifications to the design, including modified impulse engines, additional phaser strips, modified warp nacelles, and a few other minor mods.

Type-9F Shuttle

Recognizing the remarkable speed and maneuverability of the original Type-9 shuttle, Starfleet Command commissioned a project to quickly develop an upgraded variant of this craft which would be optimized for a combat role.

The variant would feature new high-performance impulse engines which would boost the craft’s sub-light speed by over 80% as compared to the original Type-9 variant.

In addition, shields, weapons, maneuverability, and survivability would all be dramatically upgraded over previous variants.

Developed in response to the Borg threat, the 9F offered a fast and efficient way to get large numbers of Starfighters into operation without a lengthy development cycle.  In addition, pilots who were already flying the standard Type-9 could be quickly trained to fly the upgraded variant with a minimal learning curve.

9Fs were first deployed aboard the U.S.S. Galaxy, under the command of Fleet Captain Matthew Raven.  At the time, the Galaxy had just been refit, and was one of a small number of ships within Starfleet which were well-suited to deploy fighter craft in large numbers.

While there were many skeptics who doubted the efficacy of repurposing a shuttlecraft into a Starfighter, the 9F variant quickly proved itself in the field.  Multiple encounters with hostile Cardassian, Romulan, Ferengi, Borg, and pirate craft quickly proved the skeptics to be wrong.

The 9F’s physical similarities to the original Type-9 have also proven to be an unexpected asset.  In several instances, adversary pilots are believed to have misidentified and subsequently underestimated these craft, a mistake which, on several occasions, had dramatic consequences.

Due to its limited cargo and payload capacity, the 9F’s capabilities as a fighter bomber are somewhat limited, but even in this role, the 9F has outperformed expectations.

While Starfleet has subsequently developed several all-new dedicated fighter craft, the 9Fs continue to serve in several important roles, including:  Reconnaissance, Ground Support, Interceptor, and Starfighter.
