Description Ahh, autumn is my favourite time of the year!
You might not expect it when you meet me in the streets - always on high heels and dressed in black with semi-goth makeup - but I love to be out in the forest and pick mushrooms. The cats usually tag along and it's so much fun! Who needs a dog for walks, right?
My neighbours give me strange looks sometimes when I'm out because I'm usually talking to the cats all the time. They start to meow and call for me when they lose sight of me out in the big, bad forest so if I call their names or whistle as I walk they'll respond and come running. (Cute!)

This is Gizmo out in the lovely beech forest where I live. He's just spotted one of the neighbours (also out after mushrooms ((they're MY mushrooms, dammit!)) so I very much approve of this title.)

Also, how do you keep the cat from dashing away? Quite an impressive photo!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to fuzzylittlebastard [2014-10-13 10:00:18 +0000 UTC]

Aww, soggy falls are no good at all. They should be crispy and full of colours.

And thank you! Usually I don't do anything to keep them from dashing away. They do dash away - and they're so fast! - so I've had to work on my timing instead. Most of the times I only have a few seconds to work with so I read the cat's body language and know pretty much when the dash is going to happen. If I'm quick I can get one or two good shots before it happens.

It is of course possible to bribe the cat with treats, but that will mostly keep him in his place and nothing else. He'll focus on the food instead of the surroundings and then it's hard to catch the eyes in the camera because he's simply not interested in my camera - none of my cats are. So I try to be alert and take pictures of moments of natural stillness instead, because I think it brings more life into the photo. The cat's just doing his thing and I get to catch it on camera. I don't stage my pictures, I just tag along to see what happens and then, when a good opportunity for a photo shows, I'm ready.

RavenMontoya In reply to fuzzylittlebastard [2014-10-13 20:21:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm pretty sure they can be trained to do a lot of things, but I haven't trained my lot to sit still at all. I focused on other things when they were kittens just to make it easier to take care of them later on. For example they must all allow me to touch their paws and clean them. Since they get to go out as they please there will be injuries caused by other cats in the neighbourhood and then it's important to me to be able to take care of the wounds without having to go to the vet unless it's something serious.

Autumn is definitely the best time of the year (although I love spring almost equally as much).

Haha awesome that you go out with the kitties, sounds like an awesome way to go on a walk, and there's so many pluses over having a dog including; no crapping and pissing over everything they see, and that they basically can looks out for themselves and they probably enjoy it just as much as you do.

What mushrooms are you picking btw? We had a lot of Karl Johan this year but that was in August-September.. also a lot of SmΓΆrsopp (don't ask me what they're called in english. ). We spent a lot of days in the forest but then we ate so much mushrooms fried with butter that I'm still feel sick just thinking about it. Waaay too much.. good thing we dried most of them.. we have a fair supply now.

But we still lack Chanterells... they were pretty late in Gothenburg this year... or at least where we were picking them and by the time they started to come out we had stopped looking.
Maybe we should take a turn into the forest again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to sparrowcrazy [2014-10-12 12:15:08 +0000 UTC]

I pick mostly Chanterells. They start to pop up around early July and then I'm out once a week to harvest. They're still going strong so you should definitely look for them again if you haven't done it for a while. It's been a nice mix of sunlight and rain lately. I think they're thriving. I think trattisar and trumpeter has started to show up as well. (Gotta love this Swinglish.)

There was a period with loads of Karl Johan and smΓΆrsopp. Apparently the smΓΆrsopp is called "slippery jack" or "sticky bun" in English. Well, that makes sense.
I get tired of eating "soppar" after a while, just as you. Once you've had too many it's like they all turn into butter fried slugs or something, isn't it? Just thinking about them makes me feel a little bit sick right now. So slimy... *shudder* o.O;
For a brief period the whole forest was filled with fly agarics as well. It was so beautiful! I wish it could have lasted longer. It was like a mushroom theme park out there.

Swinglish for the win. And yeah definitely worth a try... we have this forest nearby were there was lots of TrattchanterellsΒ  last year.. and lots of moose tracks as well (they really love those mushroom don't they.. ) The only annoying thing is that there's a lot of other people and their dogs in those parts and a fair few bottles laying around which sadly ruins it a bit. That's why I prefer going away to the forests behing the Botanical gardens; clean, quiet and beautiful.

Sticky Bun...Β  Gotta love english names for some things.
Thank you! I knew it couldn't be just me that thought of slugs when eating them. That's one reason why I really don't like the normals sopps like bjΓΆrksopp and the like... they are so slimy and don't even taste that spectacular. It's still pretty new for me too eat this much mushrooms... i used to gag everytime I tried anything but chanterells or karljohan.
A mushroom must be really really tasty for me to bear with the sliminess..

Fly agarics... i just learnet another new word.. Indeed they are so beautiful! That another thing I love about autumn, there's so much inspiration from nature, it's just waiting for you to take out the drawing pad and paint/draw something!

RavenMontoya In reply to sparrowcrazy [2014-10-13 12:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Β The moose just loves those trattis... I mean Funnel Chanterelle. I'm happy when I find some for myself. I'm not a big fan of moose. They come into the garden and rip apart my apple trees. They're like really, really, huge rats with a pretty dumb look on their faces. (Such a huge body with such a tiny brain... I think it shows.) I wish the cats could hunt moose. I'd like a tame tiger just to keep the bloody moose out.

SmΓΆrsopp is kind of the only sopp I tolerate for a longer period. They rest turn to slugs pretty quickly. So Chanterells ftw! xD
I found some yesterday during a walk in the woods and it was like striking gold. Sadly I did not have my camera with me. It was just one of those perfect mushroom spots you dream about. I didn't want anyone else to pick them though so I didn't run home for the camera.

English has some really funny and sometimes weird names for things. I think it's a lot of fun to compare Swedish and English names on some things, like flowers. There's just no end to the funny things. Take foxglove vs. fingerborgsblomma. Both of them make some sort of sense and they're both adorably funny.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sparrowcrazy In reply to RavenMontoya [2014-10-15 08:12:01 +0000 UTC]

Rip them apart? I knew they ate the apples ... do they climb the trees as well? We have quite a lot of moose in these parts... and a lot of poor buggers who gets chased by them, which can be quite funny (my parents saw a guy racing past with a moose at his heels two or three years ago.) or it can be less funny a when a woman got kicked in the head by a moose right outside our building (she had a dog with ther which might have been the provocation). Never been chased by one myself although we've had a few encounters.. one pretty recent when me and my mum walked right into a cow and her two calves, luckily she didn't mind us but continued over the road we were on.. one of the calves was hurt and limping though.

Aww it's been a long time since I've found any bigger chanterelle place.. it all all small and scattered ones around here... or maybe it's just all the hobbits that got there before us.

Haha indeed it does, I have the extra fun of having Polish as my native language.. now this one has really fun varieties.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to sparrowcrazy [2014-10-15 13:19:58 +0000 UTC]

The moose around here is like: "Apple trees! Gimme! Oh? No apples? Then give me the leaves! No, never mind. Give me the branches!" *om nom nom nom*
My poor trees. Most of them aren't that big. The moose seems to think it's fun to tear at them if they have the chance. Doesn't matter if it's a tree without fruit or a tree that's not supposed to be eaten. They just tear off the branches. Bad moose!

They actually chase people? That's freaky. Here it's usually me that chases the moose. I run out to chase them away. The trick is to make a lot of noise and, whatever you do, not back down. They'll chase you the second they sense you're scared and start to run away. Better walk forward and challenge them, that'll make them nervous. Cows with calves are the worst though. I try my best to stay away from them, but I've chased them out of my garden as well.

I feel like I'm almost tripping over wild animals in the garden some times. I have badgers too, but they don't do any harm. I was a bit worried they'd hurt the cats at first, but the cats and the badgers seem to know each other well enough not to upset each other. Sometimes the cats sit on a row on the porch and watch the badgers while they eat seeds that has fallen from the bird feeder. It's hilarious. All the cats look like: "The strange creatures are back. What do we do with them?"

Aww, bad hobbitsesss. Must not sssteal the mussshrooms, precious! *it's just one of those days when the brain makes up random things*

Oh, cool! Do you know more languages? Must be so nice to be fluent in three languages. I learned some German at school, but I never got good enough to be fluent. I understand it better than I can speak it though.

sparrowcrazy In reply to RavenMontoya [2014-10-27 20:49:32 +0000 UTC]

Mwahaha bad moose.. we just had one around yesterday. Stood and ate out of a bush. I noticed it when I looked out to see why a dog was barking like mad, darn little daschhound barks at everything he sees, but apparently he had a reason this time. Moose didn't seem to mind much though. We almost though that he would chase someone as two guys went past it quite close but they didn't even notice it and the moose just looked surprised after them.

Seriously? You chase the moose away? O.o Good too know that's possible... I had no idea that they actually back off.. I though for sure they'd just charge right at you.

Aww that's awesome! I love bagders! The more animals the better, although I put the limit down if they're going to destroy the garden (like the voles do in our colony garden). And I guess I'd rather not meet a wild boar though... do you have any of them?

Makes perfect sense to me... the hobbitsess stole all the mussshroomss...

Well no fluently yet.. it those three and a few word in spanish (that's what we had in school). I do intend to learn spanish properly though. And right now I'm learning welsh as well, and latin although I haven't started the latin course yet.
I would like to learn german and russian some day as well... it's always a good idea to have backup languages if you're gonna travel somewhere.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to sparrowcrazy [2014-10-29 23:13:02 +0000 UTC]

I've not seen any moose around here for a while, which is quite nice. I saw a fox yesterday though. That's quite rare so I felt lucky.
But yes, the moose will back down if you're the offensive one. I like this one as an example: youtu.be/YZEbBZ2IrXE
Notice how the moose doesn't back down until the guy begins to walk forward? Yeah. That's the key. Stand your ground, make yourself big, make noises and then move forward. Be the hunter, not the hunted. The moose will loose its nerve. I've lost count on how many times I've done that. It's not something I recommend doing, but it can be good to know if you one day find yourself eye to eye with one of those big, dumb creatures.

Voles are not really a problem here with *ahem* four cats around to hunt them down. Without the cats there would be an invasion of mice in the house though. 4 years ago when Felix was still a kitten and my old cat was too sick to hunt I clearly noticed the difference. There were mice in the walls and on the roof and it was horrible. Now? Nothing.
I don't know if there are any wild boars around here. There's been one sighting, but I think someone shot it. I live with beeches all around though. Beech forests are like the natural habitat of wild boars so if they come here I think they'd feel right at home. I hope they won't. They seem dangerous and they dig up people's gardens.

Oh, you must like languages then. That's very ambitious. Great for you!
I've watched enough anime to learn a little Japanese just by listening. But other than that I only know random words and stuff in other languages.

Autumn is a great! Perhaps you can make an "autumn travel", like... go somewhere just to experience autumn?
I don't know if it's weird, but I have that sort of goals on my bucketlist. I want to go to Canada and see all the red and orange maple leaves in all their full glory. I have a really soft spot for colourful trees. I'd gladly travel to Japan just to see the cherry blossoms as well. Like, take me to the trees first! Then I can care about the rest of the country.

That's a great idea. It's not weird at all, since "experience autumn" is on my bucket list too! Yes, Canada. I saved many pictures of Canada in autumn. xD Autumn in Japan is pretty as well. I'm gonna save up so I could go to those places!!

That's the thing that I love in autumn. The colors and hues of the trees are so fascinating. And I would really love do that jumping over the pile of fallen leaves thing, leaves angel (lolwut!?) or just simply lying down!xDD Haha trees first!

I forgot to include this. It's really cute when you take a walk with your cats!

I think your neighbors are just jealous, don't mind them.lol

RavenMontoya In reply to ink-avenue [2014-10-13 11:58:19 +0000 UTC]

Hey, for liking trees. If you ever go, send me a note and maybe we can meet up under some tree and just sit there like... "Woah, look at those leaves~ " xDD
Trees are awesome. I have some really, really big beeches in the forest behind my house. Beeches are protected in Sweden because they're pretty rare so I'm very happy no one will cut them down. I have this awful neighbour. He seems to love to cut down trees, but thankfully he can't touch the beeches. It makes me sad every time he cuts down some other big, old tree though. ;___;

I've actually planted three small maples around my house this year so I hope I get to see big bunches of orange and red leaves eventually. Hehe, when I'm old. Damn slow grown trees...
I already have a collection of cherry trees though. There are 13 pink Japanese cheery trees around the garden and they're becoming quite big now. It's just lovely during the spring and if I'm lucky their leaves turn a beautiful orange in the autumn - if the storms don't tear them down before it happens.
Autumns can be very different from year to year where I live. If there's an early frost the colours will look better than if it's a mild autumn. Worst case scenario: Everything turns brown, grey and dull. It's depressing. This year seems to be golden yellow, which is a much happier hue.

Haha, I have this other neighbour with lots of dogs. He and I used to run into each other in the forest which was a bit unpleasant at times. His dogs start to bark like mad as soon as they see another human and once I had my cats with me and they all hissed and fled up into the trees. The man in question can't control his dogs very well so it's a bit uncomfortable when he's walking all five of them at the same time. Four of them are really big and seem pretty wild so I don't really know what would happen if he lost hold of them because they're too strong for him. But of course, I would never abandon my cats so at that time I just glared at him and stood my ground, like: "Yours are on leashes so I suggest you take yours down some other path." (Channelising my best Gandalf "You shall not pass!" face.) Β
Since then he tries his best to avoid me. I once saw him more or less jump over a ditch and run the other way with his dogs (and they were all barking like idiots as usual). I didn't have the cats with me that day, but I still had to laugh. xD

ink-avenue In reply to RavenMontoya [2014-10-14 12:17:24 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I will.xD And we're going to catch falling leaves while we're at it.lol

Why your neighbor's doing that? Is he a lumberjack or a furniture maker (that would be reasonable) or does he just have a hatred for trees?

Oh I know the feels. It's really horrible especially if you know that tree ever since. There's a hospital near our house and they have this majestic rows of Acacias it's really pretty, but they have to cut most of them down since they decided to build another building there. It would be better if they just relocated the trees.

Wow, that's an impressive collection. We don't have cherry trees here, since it's a tropical country. But there's a similar, not totally related to true cherry tree, but they really look similar. I was really eager to buy saplings of that tree, but the store was closed down, because some greedy corp. bought the land where the store is and they were evicted.Β

If only surrounding trees with huge rocks would work, storms tearing down trees wouldn't be a problem.

Ow, a dull autumn, yikes. I hope to see some pictures of autumn in your place, especially your cherry and maple trees.

About your neighbor with the dogs is not just uncomfortable, it's downright scary and dangerous!! My god, somebody tell that guy to get his dogs trained! Who knows what could've happen if he totally lose control of them... I remember reading a news about this little girl who died because of the dogs of this certain guy suddenly went berserk and mauled the poor kid.

Hahaha Good thing channeling your inner Gandalf worked out! Stay safe still you guys!Β
