Description
Vanity (evil) vs. Humility (good)Society has a way of making out the beautiful, well-dressed and well-versed people as the "good guys" and those who dress and act eccentrically as the "bad guys". Generally, it is the opposite...the vanity in the "good guys" prevent them from caring about anything but themselves and the more eccentric people tend to go out of their way to help. The vain attempt to destroy what the humble help to make better. If we all tap in to that humility, the world would be a far better place to live.

I love this. I especially love how you've broken the stereotype of what we see as good and evil. Β

This topic is one I hold quite dear to my beliefs.
On the left, a well dressed, very acceptable looking, seemingly perfect woman admiring herself in a mirror-like medium with a self-indulgent expression upon her face, dead forest in the background implies that she is beautiful to behold on the surface but lacks any true caring for much else that would further enhance the outward appearance with inner, deeper meaning.
On the right, a woman garbed darker, ragged clothing and sporting body art depicting 'bad' imagery cradling a newly sprouted plant in a lush forest background indicates her traditionally oft-looked down on and otherwise aggressive appearance to be opposite to the amount of caring and benevolence she openly displays, emphasized by her content expression.
Personally, I'd waste no time with the woman on the left, as there'd be nothing to the encounter I'd learn or appreciate, in contrast to the woman on the right.
Fantastic piece.

After reading your reply I decided to head over here to check out your piece. This is lovely, really. The part that really catches my attention is the subtle way it looks like she's staring at herself in the fountain's water to represent her vanity. I really like that.
I wish I could do 3D images.. I'd love to see my work come to 'life' like this. It's really lovely!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I needed something to tie the two women together...and then the idea of the fountain helping to provide life to one side, while also acting as a mirror to the other side hit me.
What I'd love to do is mix digital painting with the 3D renders...one of these days I'll be able to afford one of those dang tablets...lol.

Tablets = yay ^^
How did you learn to do your 3D? I'd love to learn it but going to school for a bunch of years would be a bummer. I'm like you, I'd love to mix my painting with 3D.

No schooling here...I'm all self-taught. I bought a 3D render program called Poser. Then I buy pre-made content (characters, hair, clothing, props, ect.), stick it all together in a scene and render it (which means let the program take it from preview stage to a smooth, final image). The scenes are set up in photo-studio type of way, with lighting and cameras. Depending on how detailed the image, just to render it could take days. And then I always enhance the image in a paint application (Paint Shop Pro). But I could do a whole lot more if I had a tablet I could paint with.
Anyway, if you really want to start learning 3D, go to daz3d.com. You can download their free 3D program and start playing around with it. I think it comes with some content to help you get started. And if you need help, the forums there are great. I hang out there all the time.

The concept for this picture is brilliant. You used a picture to say what most people are thinking and or know, and that's really brave and creative.

Thank you! I wanted to do something different for the theme of the contest. For most of the duration of the contest, I could think of nothing. Then suddenly near the deadline, the idea of what society likes to believe vs. what truly is popped into my head...and thus this image was born.

So true.
Unfortunately we tend to judge by appearances and anything out of the norm causes apprehension. Yet it is those non-average people who can often see deeper and farther. Perhaps that initial sense of difference causes one to start questioning which results in some very deep journeys. Those full of pride never take those journeys.
