Brilliant work. I saw SickleYield 's post about this while I was out of the country, but only looked at it on my phone, where all the drama and detail was lost. Now that I see it in full size, I'm just as awed as she was. This really is a masterclass in composition.

I clearly need to cut back on doing my "studio" style renders and do something different.
Yes, I only happened to come and look at this as a result of SickleYield 's Journal entry about storytelling in renders but this is a great image.

This is so great. Β And that skeleton in the background is the perfect touch. Β You wonder, does she know it's there and did she put him there, only to engage in a quiet conversation with her little bot, OR... is she so lost in that conversation that she doesn't realize what's behind her? Β Either way, beautiful work, and I love how the red where that skeleton is standing contrasts with the rest of the scheme. Β

That is the fun part of art.....the viewer can read whatever story into it that they personally see.
Your "read" on it may be different that what I set out in my mind, but that makes it fun for me, to see what you see as a story and enjoy the new perspective

Thanx

Now this is some nice work.Β  Telling a story through one image is one of the big goal of what we do, and this is a gorgeous example of that.Β  The red and purple lights up there on the right side of the image and the camera tilt both push the eye toward the skeleton so it's the first thing you see - and then, when you've absorbed that, the eye travels downward to the dejected figure at the base of the cryotube.

Some nice fog post and DOF work there as well, so that the robot doesn't draw too much focus from the female figure.Β  Really stellar.Β  This one's going into my "Amazing" folder.

P.S. - this is also a great example of using space to equal time.Β  Things are crowded to the skeleton's left, suggesting crowded emotions, and wide and blank to the right, stretching out that moment of immobility (I was going to say silence but I realized with the red lights I'm actually picturing some kind of alarm going off).

If only I could compose this well on every product, man. Β  I feel lucky if I do something okay with composition in ONE promo.

Thanx for all the feedback.
I am glad you picked up on alot of the things.
I was afraid the skeleton would not get noticed, so I set up the shot just like you described, so the eye meets the skeleton first, then you start to see the rest of what is going on.
With regard to the use of space, I also wanted it to create a sense of visual weight overtop the gal, to help add to the heaviness of her emotions.
I was worried about the little bot being too bright of a colour, but if it got too dark it would blend too much into the scene, and I would have lost a little visual depth.

As for promos....we can't have this much fun with them. They have a different purpose, the eye has to be fixed on the product, and that doesnt leave much story room (though I try sometimes)

That's a good point, too.Β  A storytelling render isn't usually "about" a hair or skin or prop, etc.

(edit: isn't)

I really like how the bot's tilted head adds to the mood, very clever.
