You'd probably be surprised at what someone can do to you with a good heel. Pretty much focuses the force of impact on a very small space. Think about punching something, then doing the same with a 1/4 inch dowel between your middle two fingers firmly seated there. Basically the whole point of rapiers-make as small a surface area on the tip as possible without making it too weak to do anything.
