Iago is one of the worst villains in the entire series. I feel very confident in saying that

Iago is a perfect example of a character in Fates whose sole existence revolves around Corrin.
He exists to be a character who hates Corrin. All he ever does in his screentime is conspire against Corrin. CORRIN CORRIN CORRIN! Literally all there is to him is his unexplained hate boner for Corrin, and almost nothing else.
Even as like an evil for the sake of evil villain, he pales in comparison to other villains in the series like Narcian.

So to sum it up, everything he does, another villain in the series has done it so much better?
Because when you mentioned hate boners, that reminded me a little of Berkut(whoβs actually my favorite villain in the series, coincidentally enough), except unlike Berkut with Alm, Iago doesnβt seem to have any reason for hating Corrin so much.
Or perhaps Iago fought against a Corrin main in Smash 4. Iβd know how bad that is lmao

I wouldn't really compare Berkut to Iago because 1. Berkut is a WAY better villain than Iago (and he's my favorite villain in the series as well), and 2. I wouldn't say he entirely revolves around Alm, since part of his motive for becoming Emperor is to give his fiance Rinea the status he feel she deserves (even when it's later revealed that Rinea doesn't really want to be Empress and just wants to be with Berkut). It's only when Alm starts to get in the way of that does Berkut start to lose more and more of his sanity, even resulting in him becoming batshit insane over the reveal that Alm is the true heir to the Rigelian throne.

They would have been better off adding the freaking parrot! Iago basically exists as a magnet to draw hate. He has neither the cunning and manipulative skills of his English namesake, nor the fierce ambition of his Japanese name, Macbeth. He's just there to be a prick and make you want to beat the daylights out of him.
Honestly, IS owes Scarlet for screwing her over so much, especially in Revelations. She's the only characters who doesn't get to join in the happy ending just for a cheap attempt at an emotional punch. She deserves a top-of-the-line spot in Heroes!

Fun Fact: Did you know that Iago has portraits where he blushes that go unused since he's not playable? In Fact, several Non playable Characters have Portraits that also go unused. Garon, Hans, Mikoto and Omozu all share that unused data. Nichol and Candace are playable, but, also share the unused portrait Data. You can even look it up.
