Description
6th of September 1947After one year as a loyal agent of the SDECE, but only going on missions with my mentor Serge Spilorccio (a.k.a. agent Bayard) to train me, the agency thought that the time as come for me to go on my very first solo mission.
They said that I might begin with a simple one, and that after I accomplished it, I would be chosen for others missions each time more difficult.
Although my mentor thought I might not be ready for this yet, I still accepted my duty since the dirrector Duval simply won't listen to him.
For this mission, I wouldn't even have to leave the French territory, it consisted in dismantling a French Communist activist group that could be a serious threat for the next ellections as the political situation between the western and the soviet block in Europe was already tricky.
To do so, I had to assassinate their leader Jean Goudrot during their monthly reunion in a disused factory in the north of the country that was closed during the 30's after a Marxist revolt.
That sounded easy indeed, then I took the train for the Nord-pas-de Calais region and reached towards that factory.
I can hear about 10 up to 15 voices inside, the meeting has already begun, I shall enter from the roof to pass unnoticed and then shoot Goudrot when he is making his galvanic speach, this strategy is dangerous, but the effect on on the other members would be terrifying, plus the general panic and confusion would let me enough time to leave this place.
After I climbed the whole complex thanks to the outside metallic ladders and brick walls, I cut the glass roof with the circular cutter and a suction cup and use my hooked cable to begin my descent to the factory.
after several minutes of making my way through these rusted workshops, I found the perfect spot to aim at Goudrot : high and discreet.
But as he began to reach the paroxism of his speech full of Marxist nonsense, the mission took an unexpected turn, Goudrot began to say "This is why my friends, I want to make this dream come true for all of us, even for our guest of honor... Monsieur de Rastignac!"
Then I stopped right there, how could he know I was here, I made sure I was as silent as possible, and how did he know my name? Before I could find an answer, about ten of his lackeys run towards my position upstairs and began to try to capture me, and even if fought with all the techniques my mentor taught me, I was not strong enough to take the advantage. Finally, I was hold by most of my opponents and one of them put a tissue full of chlorophorme on my noze to make me fall asleep.
When I woke up in a little room only illuminated by a weak light bulb, I felt I had difficulties to breathe and that I couldn't move an inch, I was totally tied up on a chair with massive hardened steel chains (this means they already knew enough about me to know that I could tear my way out of mere ropes, how did they know that? How did they know I was comming for their leader?) and then I realised that if breathing became so suddently difficult, it was beacause they tightenned my waist and ribs like hell to hinder my breathing, they also want me to be limited in my efforts but why?
Then I saw the biggest threat in this little room : a time bomb was attached on my stomach, it was not ticked yet, but still I had to get out of here.
The metallic door in front of me slides on the right and Goudrot appears in his black felt coat and red scarf while smiling at my pittyfull situation "So monsieur le Duc de Rastignac, do you feel compfortable on this elegant chair? We tried to find one as close as the ones you are used to sit on as a member of the corrupted domminant class!"
he said, then I asked "What does that mean, how do you know me, how did you know I was coming?"
He lauged before he tells me "You are so young and naive, that is so cute. You see the SDECE as any other secret service is infested by moles, and we both know that every mole has a price, you should better checked your colleagues' backgrounds before you trust them... But why am I telling you this? These advices won't serve you anymore now."
He snapped his fingers and then one of his men came in the room and gagged me with a chain in my mouth before he locks it behind my head.
"What a pity that I have to kill a young man as distinguished, competant and accomplished as you, your services would have been very usefull for my ideals, if only you weren't an elite scum!" then pushed the button of the bomb "I originally thought that I would let you live only ten minutes just to let us the time to leave the place, but then I thought that seing your life slowly coming to an end in an hour would be funnier! enjoy your well-deserved death Monsieur le Duc!" he said as he left the room and closed the door.
Goudrot was right, it was the most painfull hour since I was hired by the SDECE, I have been struggling of all my might against my chains, which was impossible because of how tightenned these were, and the more I tried to move the more painfull it was as I was suffocated by these same chains around my lower ribs and waist. I was sweating and grunting for more than 45 minutes, after all this useless struggle I lost my energy and my hope and began to think about Julie, Mother, and my one year old Aurélien. Then I said to myself deep inside "No, you survived to the second world war, the London blitz and the Indochina riots, I can't die like that, not today, I have a mother to care about, a wife to love, and a son to raise! keep fighting!" Then I looked the clock, there was still 10 minutes to do this, "I can do it!" so I began to try to slip my left hand under the chains. After I pulled it out of the bond for a long and painfull time, I finnally mannaged to take out my hand, it was partially excoriated, but free.
I looked the clock again, only two minutes left! There is no time to waste! so I used my nails to take the screws out and oppened the clock box and then pull the orange and white wires out. Then it stopped at only 30 seconds before I got killed. Relieved, but still not free, my new question was "how do I get free now?"
Four hours of trying to get free later, the door openned again to reveal... My mentor! "Thank godness you are alive! I knew you were not ready yet!" he said with a smile. That was a joy that simply couldn't be hidden to see him here! I couldn't say thank you with that chain in my mouth, but my eyes were saying enough.
After he used a crowbar to take off all the locks, I told him the whole story in the car on the way back. It seemed obvious that a traitor in the SDECE was working for Goudrot and tried to eliminate me, but the question was "Who?"

The dirrector assumed too much about Louis' experience, he should have put him on an easier one, and he should have checked potential moles within his department.

Very impressed with this short narrative describing Louis's first spy mission. Intriguing change of careers after the War, from soldier to secret agent. He's got that touch of Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 with the handsome suit and the frequent misfortune to find himself in tight situations (no pun intended), but always finding a way to escape. What's amusing is how Goudrot does the one big flaw that so many other villains perform: giving the hero enough time to make a difference between life or death, as opposed to simply eliminating them quickly. He won't be laughing once Louis catches up with him in due time. As for a traitor in the SDECE, heaven forbid it would be his own superior or mentor... That's just too cliche. Still, a pleasure to see our charismatic raccoon in another thriller story as he defends his country of France in a different way. With attention to the artwork itself here, having a filthy metal chain in one's mouth feels simply repulsive, to say nothing of the fearful restraint and discomfort such means apply. Some viewers would question where his tail is located; answer, behind the backrest of the chair, raised up in that apprehensive state. The background gives off a unique grimy atmosphere in contrast to how Goudrot mocks Louis's status by chaining him to a luxurious chair. In closing, another fantastic, if very dramatic, image of our favourite raccoon soldier-turned-spy. Thank you for sharing the fruits of your talents.

Actually this is Louis' first SOLO mission, he already made about 30 up to 40 missions in the past year. And yes the fact that the villain gives the spy enough time to escape is cliché, but practical since there is no other way to have the hero survive. Which is typical in Bond movies, the only difference here is that the spy have a Scottish but French accent! ^^
As for the chain in the mouth, it was fully intentional from Goudrot since the whole chaining up was thought in the way to make him feel as uncompfortable as possible in spite of the luxury chair.
And no, the traitor would definetly not be his mentor, but he definetly might be a jealous rival less gifted than Louis or a noble/bourgeoisie hater marxist.
As for the tail, this last one tried to put it on the drawing, but it looked messy so he got rid of this while hoping this would get unnoticed (fail).
Thank you very much for this compliment by the way.

Well, he is a scret agent, then he has to be well dressed even when he got captured. Plus he is a Duke, then wearing a three-piece suit and tie is not an option for a man of his class!
Btw he is honored to be the first one in you new faves collection!
