I heard a theory where the 4 Guardians are the repressed sides of X that he never gets to show but are now represented through these 4 personalities. Since X is based off humans, Dr. Light programmed him to be able to think, feel, and make his own decisions, it's no wonder he's also able to experience/feel the dark side of humanity (pain, death, war, grief, jealousy, hatred, etc)
