Horrible photograph, but It's all I have of this so far.It is a swan dragon, staring at his reflection. This was done a year ago for my art portfolio. It needs more in the background I think.

Those faint colors add to the piece nicely.
The orange really stands out in that scene, and the neck and body look nice and soft, thanks to that texture.
As for the background, I think it looks a bit unnatural because the trees are rather uniformly spaced, and about the same height. You could add a bit of reflection for those trees, or add a few fainter smaller ones near the horizon, to add a bit of distance, or atmospheric haze.
Developed backgrounds are good, but if you add in too much, it starts to look cluttered.

Your advice on the background is great! I really want to do a new version of the painting, just to try it out.
The trees is another true observation, I never thought about that until you mentioned it.
Version two will look much nicer. :3

Simple is often better as you have filled the space nicey, though you don't take focus from the main object in piece. Keep up the good work.
