Description
I couldn't resist ~redguard 's offer in #Illustrationshare for people to color his line arts. I jumped to it! I quickly ran into his gallery, I already knew he was an awesome penciler/inker and snatched one up! Med-Spawn was my victim here. I'm a fan of Spawn, not too obvious with it nor am I too versed in his world. Always wanted to either draw or color a picture of Spawn and the great ~redguard allowed me to do one of the two.Pencils/Inks (10 hours or so)

Tiny Edit: ~redguard pointed out 2 small things that could be redone and I did

Spawn did make an appearance in the XBox version of Soul Calibur, but he was originally a comic book character for such a long time! (perhaps, I don't know for certian, longer than I've been alive) This version is a medival one, in one comic (don't know what one exactly) he was in midival times. Hence the shoulder pad, sword and sheild.

That's actually what Spawn is.. it's not entirely a new design. And I didn't draw this one, I only colored it.

Interesting method of colouring, no flats, or neutral bg colour used from the start. looks very 90's image, except for the green slime on the sword, that should be red
too lazy to work out what was edited, but looks like the embers got a touch up.

I somewhat lack in a good coloring ability (or method). I saw an iimage of SPAWN with his sword having green on it. So I just, did that stuff green..
Yup, the fire was one of the two things.

Colouring book ¬_¬
DC Comics Guide to colouring and Lettering. Ignore the fact its being made by DC Comics because the content is worth it, even if its just on loan. You could always check [link] too I suppose.
I got 1/2 eh. What's that worth?
oh Nothing ¬_¬
In that case...

Half is worth this

A cookie? Geez lady, you really broke the bank with that one :shifty:
Well I'm finally reading through the book myself (hopefully I'll add a new dimesion to my skills ¬_¬) but so far I've learnt things like how you're meant to keep colours in the same value, which I assume was the other touch up you had to do with the green slime in the dark patch under the sword next to the bone carcas or whatever the brown it is. Its a bit out of sync with the rest of the pic.
and if its not, f**k
oh well, 3 ways to learn these days, but I only rate one of these ¬_¬
1) Practice 2) Books 3) Net

Haha, nope... didn't do that.. actualy it was a retarded little piece of 'slime' that I had missed value? see.. I'm too dumb to actually get and understand what people say/suggest. ._.

Aww well. Guess I'll have to keep looking (which i won't, cos I have a real life ¬_¬)
Value, well i could explain it, but considering you'd still be missing the other 5/6 parts of colour theory, it'd be pointless. luckily, up until about 3hrs ago, I had no idea what it was either, so I'm not gonna try look like an authority on the subject of colour for once. In fact I think as a track record monochrome artist it would be quite stupid of me to try otherwise. I need to move onto the procedure behind colouring now anyways.

Hmm, my eyes just can't grasp color it seems no matter how much I try and learn. Ah well I'll stick to just pencil shading.

What's wrong with doing more then just sitting at a pc all day?
if thats all you can't do feel lucky, things I can't do
1) use colour ------- though that might change
2) shade in grayscale ------- dunno why i can't do this anymore
3) hatch, feather, stipple and cross hatch ----- this is why i use solid blocks of black
4) draw women ----------- I can technically draw women, i just feel embarrassed doing it, and then get all weird and so i just don't draw women
5) draw cars ------- even when I'm tracing it goes wrong
6) write fiction -------- not so much art related.... sorta
Other then that, I'm the world's greatest artist/visionary/autuer/teachmothersecretlover/creator on this planet.

only things I really CAN do is: color IN the lines (doesn't mean that the coloring's that well), shade with a mech pencil, and copy characters. oh and manage to do decent frame layouts for comic pages (at least from what I was told..)

smygba In reply to Raz-Xion [2005-12-09 18:28:19 +0000 UTC]
You shade using mechanical pencils! I hate doing that, you don't get a nice wide lead side to shade with. they're good for pulling out lines from blocks to creat form though. I don't own any wood pencils though anymore, so I have a larger 0.7mm for renders, otherwsie I use 0.5 or at least I did that is.

Raz-Xion In reply to smygba [2005-12-09 23:30:52 +0000 UTC]
All of my shaded stuff is with my mech pencil. Sure I don't get any wide side to shade with but I spend a lot of time shading to where it looks nice. I should probably try blending soon. 0.5mm lead is my friend, generally find the 2B softness of it and I'm all peachy.

smygba In reply to Raz-Xion [2005-12-09 23:44:37 +0000 UTC]
do you draw contours and go shade it, or work it out from what you see laid down on paper? I have 0.5mm 2B leads, but I've never used them. I used 2H for layouts, then HB for finished pencils, and 0.7mm HB to add the shadows, which basically would've been the same as 0.5mm 2Bs, except they'd be easier to erase one the work was inked.

Raz-Xion In reply to smygba [2005-12-10 02:53:39 +0000 UTC]
Not entirely sure, I just go for it right after I outline something. Keeping that samelead the whole time. I guess I have a decent amount of control to where I can do what I wish, shading wise...

smygba In reply to Raz-Xion [2005-12-10 03:10:49 +0000 UTC]
i mean you draw out a block on the art that you intend to colour with the pencil to put in your shadow as oppossed to having finished lines and then adding shadow by observation, which is what i think you said.
I asked cos people who use mech pencils do it the first method too. i did a few times. not as well as i'd like to have though

well then i assume you've never done it. i don't know of any examples which would have the stage in between so i'm not gonna bother looking. *scratches head, whats so hard to understand about drawing contours then rendering those?*
