Description
**EDIT: okay people EVERYONE and i mean EVERYONE has been asking me "hey when are you going to finish spidey and spawn..." well okay here it is. generally i will not go back over a piece that i called done because i look back at these as learning experience and to see just how far i have came..... well this one was kinda different because when i originally posted it i was only posting to get a select few ppl input on the progress that i have gotten to sooo without further ado (what kinda word is "ado" anyways) here is the completed spidey and spawn piece i really hope those of you that requested over and over for me to complete it are happy. and listen don't be afraid of what you got to say, meaning you don't have to compose your comments in "notes" verses on the comments page its self i will not get butt hurt as they say.......there are a few people i am going to be asking directly for their critiques because i think their skill is better than my own (at least right now hehe) but also because i am a huge fan of each and everyone of them. now that don\'t mean that you can\'t throw in your .02 cents too i would really like to hear from everyone.
for those that don\'t know me already if you want to give a critique i say this... be honest be straight forward and don\'t worry about my feelings for i truely believe that one will only get better through hard work practice and honesty from one\'s peers....

hey johnny thank you very much for taking the time to critique this piece i appriecate it very much... typically when someone takes the time to comment or critique i like to respond with answers or questions since i am very new at this coloring thing.
i think Nei was 100% right with the background colors and the moon... to tell you the truth like i told her was that i did color it (though it looked like shit) but i choose not to up-load with it.... it was too distracting and buzy plus i think the colors that i used didn't flow or even feel right to me.
so in saying that i am going to go back and color the background and the moon after i finish the bat-girl piece i working on now, plus i just finished a couple of commissions and am trying to get permission to post but don't know whether or not i will be able to pull those ones off.
you thought spidey was flat? hmmm that is one that i haven't gotten yet but i can see what you are talkin about a little maybe due to the fact i really didn't high-light him that much at all. and for the ahh spawn's green blast reflections i had originally thought about that but i am always afraid of over-doing it with high-lights and reflections so that explains some of the reasons why you don't see too much in my colored pieces.
color holding...you know what i didn't know what that was/is i have watched and read a couple of tutorials but haven't used it yet since i am new but i will definately try it if you really think that it would improve this piece.....
if your now one of my watchers i will try and message you when i complete this piece.... also would love to get your imput on the bat-girl once i complete it.....
thx again

i'm glad you found some campbell art to work on!
so, first thing i noticed, and really, this is probably the only thing i'm going to talk about because it is a major faux paux!
you didn't color the background yet at all, okay i get that part but you really should have at least flatted it. you colored spidey and spawn with very true colors, meaning very colorful saturated shiny colors, probably what they would look like with white light shining on them. now white light is hardly ever apparent in real life, sunlight isn't even white light. thats a whole 'nuther thing though, doesn't relate to what i'm getting t here really.
so.
you colored these guys on their own, blasting away with (btw a really neat color for the ground) a ground color that related to spawn's green blast.
so besides from that white light thing, you look around and got one last thing to color, the sky. then you notice a moon, and it's obviously supposed to be night! and really, none of the colors you have laid down presently reflect a night scene whatsoever. you've -kinda- screwed yourself there.
my advice in the future, if you're not going to color the backgrounds first (which i'd recommend for you since you're still trying to learn how to color moods), at least flat them so you can keep in mind what type of setting you're going for.

i know campbell is an absolute bad-ass!!!
lol.... well to tell you the truth i did color the background and the moon (which i kinda colored it in a color other than moonish color so maybe it is another planet) but i hated the way that it came out so when i up-loaded last night i left out just to see how many people would ding me for it. soooo i will go back and adjust colors and sat and have to up-load again.
i glad you liked the ground color i wasn't really sure because the original was a greenerish and i didn't care for it sooo.
as for the true colors, lol, i actually colored them more in a ahhhh dull color scheme like in the original also but after i finished both spidey and spawn i didn't think they popped enough sooo i put some over-lay colors over them and well i thought they looked cool liked they jumped off the page even though they where more true/saturated looking.
other than that i hear you on the background.... i will up-load tonight when i get back from work, though i wasn't thinking that this piece was set in a night-time i looked at the moon in background more as a planet than a moon sooo i will message you when up-load and thank you for taking the time to critique so straight forth and honestly
later for now

Not bad, not bad at all! Thanks for remembering to show me.
It's definitely different than I had imagined it, but it's cool nonetheless. I don't know if you do this professionally yet or if you know a lot about the business, but I do have a question.
Do you, or would you, discuss the colors with the penciller and maybe even the writer or are the colors usually left mostly to the colorist? Obviously if the script calls for everything to be bathed in red light, you'll follow that direction, but otherwise, how much is left to the colorist's whim?

hey bro, no problem i really to contact people back when they ask or request an up-date on a piece whether they are or are not watching me sooo.
alright for your questions:
-- first off no i don't do this professionally yet (of course yet being key word) i am a heavy equipment operator/supervisor but i would really like to either do the coloring thang on the side for a little extra something something or as a full time thing but i am not sure if i am really skilled enough to yet (key word again) but as for knowing anything about the business i know ahhh a little.
-- do i or would i discuss color selection with a penciller or writer? well that is kinda of a grey area question. my first thought is yes because if they are the ones paying me they have ahhhh ability to request special color schemes. also a side note to that is alot really depends on more the mood or feel of a piece. also alot has to depend on the character(s) and how well they are know. obviously if it is spidey or superman someone that everyone knows for them you really can't pick and choose your own color scheme. other than the character's i think the colorist has a lot of lead way, kinda comes down to each and every piece is different and depends on the client...
alot of times if there is an overall mood or feeling that the client wants to be protrayed the coloring will then go at it once it done will send to client to either approve or request changes then colorist will adjust accordingly. does that make any since and answer your questions?

Yeah, totally makes sense. That's kind of what I figured.
I'm an artist, a painter, but I don't have the skills for comic art, except maybe doing like a really artsy cover or something.
I would love to write comics though. I've written some scripts and I'm currently working out something I think could be pretty great.
It seems like there are a lot of pretty decent non-professional pencilers, inkers and colorists here on DA. We should all be hooking up and making books!
Anyhoo, I'm a full time journalist and I'm about to be certified to teach art for kids in grades K-12. I think it's cool that so many people take time out of their busy lives to chase the comics dream or just write/draw/ink/color for the love of it.
Keep working, my friend!

listen man, if you are an artist/painter the comic thing is all relative really. look at it like this, take away the costume take away the weapons take away the special effects what are you left with? generally either human, plant, or animal right. so if you can draw those three then it is just a matter of learning to draw the others with or without the characters. plus you will have to learn perspective when drawing comics cause alot of times if you really look a comic page/ scheme it is one or two things going on but various perspectives and that is what changes the feel of the page.
as for the scripts that is generally the hardest part for some, telling your character's story in a way that fits....get me? plus another thing to thing about is the panels in the comic, check out manga studios they have an awesome program that makes the panels for you and allows you to manipulate how you want it, plus it has other features that are cool. CHECK IT OUT!!!!
also in closing think about this man, if you like drawing and you are good at writing (at least good enought to do for a living) use what you do.... use your skills at writing to help your drawing. and drawing well if you don't think that you aren't ready practice and read/watch tutorials on draws you would be surprised at what you can learn with them.
later bro

Thanks, man.
It's funny, I actually just started re-teaching myself to draw in a "comic" style. The main reason being that I may have to pencil my own script if I can't find an artist that's interested, motivated and right for the story.
I used to spend hours practicing drawing comic stuff when I was a kid in high school and before, but it's been about 15 years...
Our art muscles need to be continually exercised to be good. We also need to work hard and practice, and a little natural talent doesn't hurt either!
Anyway, I just bought a bunch of nice ink pens, pencils, erasers, Bristol board, etc and I'm having fun. I have a long way to go before anything is good enough to even tell a mediocre story, but I am improving.
Keep in touch. Thanks again. It's always nice to have good conversation about these things.

no problem
yeah it definitely true you have to re-train because you can't believe just how much your hand forgets after that long i was in the same situation also...
you know i started buying alot of art supplies also when i first start too but then i got into photoshop because it seemed to me that all the good artist use it (being photshop) painter and a couple other handfull of programs.... once i started learning photoshop i fond that i actually like drawing and coloring more on the computer than paper (though i still do a little bit)
anyways man keep at it if you get stuck ask i will help if i can or simply ask you would be surprised there are alot of people here on DA that like helping people that are truly interested in learning to improve their skill in the medium that they are doing
hey if you not watching i am working on an angelus piece that is really cool i will send link if you want...

Cool. You're on my watch, but I don't think I've seen it.
Believe it or not, I'm pretty damn good at PhotoShop and have used it in a number of professional settings. I can't afford a Cintiq and drawing with a mouse is brutal.
How would you use it without a drawing pad thingy? I could probably do an acceptable job coloring with some practice and I certainly could get pencils to appear like pen and do cleanups, but actually drawing would be tough.

take you mouse and put it directly in front of you, look at it, bring up your right hand, make a fist, then slowly and this is the important part slowly open up your middle finger making sure to keep the other clinched tightly but ever so slowly open your middle finger until full erect thing say the following words after me.... suck it suck it!!!!!
now that is out in the air go down to your local best buy or staples and buy a "wacom bamboo fun" the small one is the one that i use right now it's operating area is only like 3X5 but once use to it you can get alot done with it!!! my gallery is prime example my colors are 110% with it...

this is good work. the thing i see is that ur using true colors, true red, true blue etc. mess with ur color pallette a lil. pick colors that look like red or blue but not the actual true colors. and sometimes its important to atleast pick a bg color at the biggining of the coloring so u have someware to get the ambient light and bounce light from to add to the figures. and u can do alot more hi lights, especially cus spawn is doing that green energy. u could have alot of fun doing green hilights and bounce light allover the place on this piece...
