Beast AU
So this AU took an insane amount of time, about the entire summer. It’s insane. So here it goes. Everything under the cut, for character related questions you can just ask me, askbox open c:
History: In the Middle Ages people toyed around with necromancy and at some point people found fossils of ancient creatures unknown till then. Soon the creature’s head became the core of obscure cults and some assembled the bones into a mask, resembling the creature’s head (when a skull was found - most likely a pliosaur). Through meditations shamans have found a way to ‘see through the creature’s eyes‘ and so the Masked shape-shifters were born. Soon afterwards they were used as a mark of power, cults, clans, entire societies. And the phenomenon spread out across the globe giving birth to most of the modern day clans.
Masks society: In the present day, the Masks have attributed themselves the world, taking care to influence every single aspect of the modern society. Some aspects are decided to families (biological family, split into genus and species, such as the Dromaeosauridae) and some are left to clans alone (which represent species, with larger clans representing an entire genus.) A clan usually represents a species, all members of the said clan having masks only representing the said species.
A mask becomes functional when it preserves a fossil/bone of the specimen and it is shaped (using actual skull or prognostics and taxidermy) to resemble the living animal. For a person to transform it must enter a state of meditation, of transposition into the said creature. The fossil or bone in the mask can come from unearthed remains or clansmen dead in their animal form.
Masks are usually passed down from generation to generation, from grandparents/grandgrandparents to children. If the clan has more masks than needed, the rest would be stored away safely, if a clan has less masks than needed they can create new ones from stored away remains, or by splitting the remains in another mask, thus creating two, or in extreme cases reducing the number of people to fit the one of the masks. A mask is inherited at the age of 16-17 and each is allowed to personalize the skin of their mask, adorning things to the animal mask, which can then be remounted in the next generation, however in most cases the mask’s basic shape remains the same (jaws can be opened and closed at re-mounting). In hindsight of tradition and of letting every generation personalize their inherited masks, most remain as huge objects, hard to carry around, some even hard to put on. Most masks have white eyeballs, which makes the transposition easier, since the eyes are blank. There are however those who changed the color to prove their exceptional control as well as making it harder for someone else to posses the mask. There are clans (like the Uchiha) who are specialized in transformation, hence why all their masks have different eye colors.
The Masks society (masks=object, Mask=mask user) is well hidden in the present day from the eyes of Blanks (non mask users) and most times the masks only represent a legacy, and hardly a functional asset. Unless you’re part of the well hidden Underworld, an often violent place of terrorism and black-marketing, where the feral form still holds much importance. The Mask society is controlling and in many cases hinders the knowledge of the past, dwindling the amount of fossils and evidence to keep their own society safe and well hidden.
Plot: The plot of this AU follows the struggles of Nagato Uzumaki as he discovers the workings of the Masked world around him, how brutal and merciless it can be.
The events are triggered by Jiro Yume, who let a Blank child escape after having discovered the truth about Masks, Jiro then counters the accusation with threats about Masks ready to annihilate or disclose the nature of mask wielders at his command. However the threats are bare and the man goes in search of an organization who can back him up, only to stumble upon the Akatsuki, whose plan is ‘to become and absorb the Sins of the World’, or in other words overthrow the brutal, controlling and overpowered Mask society. The Akatsuki soon find a way to set their plans in motion as Nagato, part of the Uzumaki clan, which controls the political class and as it is became very powerful, tries to find revenge for the clan. Nagato is enraged by his family, especially his mother Mito, when he finds out about his true heritage and the way things are working out to keep the Uzumaki in power.
This is only a summary of a story that contains tales of finding one’s self, fighting against a corrupt society, finding resolutions and peace, as well as love and forgiveness.
Hopefully me and the co-author of this au @michael-bays-steven-universe can create a fanfic telling out the whole story. (Btw Jiro is her OC, and Ai is mine)
