"I thought I understood what the word "alien" meant back then. Turians were alien. The Salarians were alien. But I didn't understand why people were afraid of them. Even the Turians who had Β been humanity's enemy didn't frighten me. Alien was something fascinating, something new to be learned about.The Batarians changed that. From a distance and from the back with all the fire and smoke they looked human. Five fingers, same height, same build. It wasn't until they started to move or they turned and you could see the reflection of the light from four, not two, eyes that you knew they were anything but. That was when I understood what "alien" meant. Something so different, so unfamiliar there was no way in hell you could mistake them for human. I knew why other humans were afraid now. I was terrified. It would be years before I could look at a Batarian and not feel my heart race, the world start to spin as that terror tried to overtake me again.
I killed my first sentient being that day. It never does get any easier."
My FemShep is a Colonist War Hero and I was always curious what happened on Mindoir and how that helped shape her into what she is. Not entirely happy with it but I'm done fiddling around for now.Β

Nice story, she indeed seems terrified - that state when you're not scared anymore, but paralyzed, full of terror, which won't allow you even to gasp in the presence of the enemy. You just hope you will survive...Β

Thank you! The character is from a game with a multiple choice past and the past the involves an assault on her home colony when she was young and I don't see it visited much in art or fiction. So I wanted to give that moment where her life changed and put her on the path she walks in the game.

I guess with an experience like that one could indeed change a lot mentally, bumping yourself from a child to a bitter grown-up.Β

Nice vignette. I've seen stuff with Shepard as a young spacer but first I've seen with her as a young colonist.

Thank you. I see a lot of the same so I wanted to add something different to the bunch. Her background as a colonist influences my head canon for my Shepard quite a bit. There's a lot of conflict when Batarians I'm are involved. Do the right thing or listen to instincts drilled in during the Blitz and Mindoir.
