Personally I like it, though you can go even darker with the dark blue. You can also make it both darker and slightly purpler for some extra dimension. There's no single way of doing it

I agree, I like it better then the original as I was able to view them side by side. The original sort of dicended into murkiness with the black. I'll have to go over your color theory as I'm weak there

Experimenting is an excellent idea, and working on the colour theory will give you a tremendous set of tools, so go for it
