I love this kind of depersonalization, but as you said it only really works when there's a "before" picture to contrast it.

Yeah, this kind of depersonalization works only if you get to see who they were first, as far as I'm concerned. When someone just go "btw, this is supposed to be X" without actually showing it, it instantly seems cheaper and lazier to me.
