I always thought of the boxtrolls as part of the fair folk, and also the ones that are responsible for keeping Cheesebridge afloat.

I mean think how the officials wasted tax money on cheese...who knows what could have happened to Cheesebridge if it weren't for the Boxtrolls?

The boxtrolls are probably responsible for recycling their garbage all those years.
In the novelization of the movie, Eggs wondered how creatures capable of inventing wondrous machines could waste so much treasure.
