Description
Something else I wanted to do, for a long time ever since I saw "Inside Out" and "Song of the Sea" on the same weekend.(And yes, this is my 3rd selkie art in a row.)
Each emotion is reacting to what being selkies will be like.
Regardless, the emotions set off on their magical adventure as seals, and change with ease.
And yes, the firefly things are based off the magic lights in "Song of the Sea".
Enjoy!
I do not own "Song of the Sea". It belongs to Tomm Moore.
I also do not own "Inside Out". It belongs to Pixar and Pete Docter.
This was based off of and inspired by their work.

Selkies version of inside out characters locks for me the emotions of Saoirse from the movie song of the sea.

I like Song of the Sea more than Inside out, but your descriptions of the emotions pre and post transformation are rather accurate. I think I'd be a cross between Fear and Joy's reactions because mermaids and undersea exploration have always fascinated me, but I would be a little scared about not being able to change back/having some serious side effects upon returning to human form.

Thank you!
You have a point there that Joy and Fear are the most appropriate reactions to being a selkie

Imagine it, you remove your selkie skin, a full-fledged human being
...Only for your first words on land to be "Ar! Ar! Ar ar! Ar! Ar!"

Yes. I've only seen it once through, but like its sister film, The Secret of Kells, it left quite the impression.

Ah, that it does!
I truly brought out the legend of the selkies like no animated movie ever has!
I'd only heard about selkies in story books and legends, but never a full-length animated feature!

Selkies are one of the lesser known sub-species of mermaids or ocean shape-shifters in general. I'm glad that Song of the Sea can bring the myths of Ireland, not just the Selkies on their own, to a wider audience. I love how the figures portrayed on Saorise's brother's walls all appear on their journey, and also the spirals of magic and light, whether warm, cold, day or night.

I remember that, almost like it was foreshadowing that Ben and his unborn sister were destined to meet these strange creatures someday

There's also that allegory where removing your emotions is something like a drug addiction:
you get comfort in the short run,
but you're also losing yourself bit by bit

I can't believe I never even heard of Song of the Sea.
Now I am more determined to see it now that I google searched it plot-wise.
[Oopsie... I just spoiled myself the ending..]

I have never seen this cartoon but I like them as seals. Very cute. Anger would make a great beach master. I am a fan of Puffin Rock and I hear it's the same creators of this cartoon.

Alas, I do not know where I can see Song of the Sea or The Secret of Kells. For the record, Inside Out is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
