Description Samebito roughly translates to "Shark Man".

He's an OC who may or may not have a role in Kubo's story.

I imagine him voiced by John C Riley.

He's basically how I first viewed Beetle before he said he used to be a man: a mythical humanoid creature who looked to Hanzo as a Master for some previous good deed he did.  Compared to Beetle, however, Samebito has even less sense in his head.  He's not unintelligent, but rather uneducated.  He's even smart enough to remember important details once you get his mind off of food.  Speaking of which, Samebito has a habit of eating anything that's not food, from wood, to rocks, to shells, to swords.  Hanzo once almost considered hiding the helmet invulnerable in the shark man's stomach for safe-keeping, but decided against it.  Samebito affectionately calls his unusual appetite an "eating disorder".  Still, he's very curious about humans and wants to know about the surface world as much as possible.  He is loathe to judge, but humble enough to accept judgment.  At times, he may be compulsive, but it's balanced out by his loyalty.  (Quite the opposite of Eddie Noodleman, Samebito is restless and always wants something to do, or he'll go into hysterics about having no purpose in life.)

Long ago, the Mighty Hanzo fought Samebito for disturbing the peace of a nearby fishing village.  But he spared him when he learned the shark creature meant no harm, he was just a poor fugitive from his home.  He came from the ocean realm, but was banished by his fellow sea-kin for his "obsession" with the mortals' world.  In getting his wish to travel there, Samebito instead found himself met with fear and scorn and hatred.  And the only way he could return is if he performed an act of courage.

It was only later that Hanzo earned Samebito's fealty when the poor shark man was surrounded by fishermen and bounty hunters.  Hanzo fought off the bounty hunters.  As for the fishermen, Hanzo 'caught' Samebito in a net single-handedly and made him swear loyalty to him.  The shark man went along with the ruse and whole-heartedly vowed "I will join you, O Mighty Hanzo, and I will lay down my life for you and Beetle Clan if I must."

From then on, Samebito found a new family in Beetle Clan, and he looked to Hanzo as a little brother he had to protect.  He wanted to go on quests with his fellow clan-mates, but alas, his fish tail would not allow him to travel on land so easily.  So he was limited to only one task: guard the shore near Beetle Clan Castle from monsters.  Still, at least it was something to do.  And Samebito fulfilled his task diligently.  Later, when Hanzo married Sariatu, Samebito welcomed her as the baby sister he always wanted.  And he was so moved when Beetle Clan welcomed the birth of Kubo.  It inspired him to one day find himself a lady shark to start a family with someday.

Fatefully, Hanzo gave Samebito a vacation shortly before the Moon King attacked Beetle Clan.  Upon his return from relaxation, the poor shark man was in for a rude awakening.  Almost like a cruel joke, his home was desolated, his human brethren were dead or disappeared, and his master was no where in sight.  Up until he met Kubo and his friends, Samebito wandered the shoreline never knowing what happened.  Contrary to his dreams, he was alone.  No children, not even a lady shark to call his mate.

One day, Samebito followed a strange boat made of leaves and crawled on board.  Although met with fear momentarily, one of Beetle's flashes alerted him the shark man was a friend and ultimately saved Samebito's life.  Upon recognizing the Beetle Clan robes on his persons, Monkey believed Beetle and (although icily) addressed Samebito as an old ally.  During their reunion, Samebito is overjoyed to recognize Kubo, having grown from baby to boy.  But he's also saddened upon learning what mysteriously befell Beetle Clan in his absence.  Having come to terms with his Master's death, Samebito offers some advice.  He tells them where they can find a cave to hide in before dark.  Before leaving, Samebito notes how Beetle is like a father to Kubo, further encouraging Beetle's resolve to protect Kubo like his own son.

That night, Washi confronts Samebito and interrogates him about Kubo's whereabouts.  Although frightened for his life, the loyal shark man refuses to divulge the boy's location and engages the Sister in a fight.  He holds out until daybreak, but just barely.  By that time, Samebito sustains many cuts that nearly bleed him to death.  But the act of surviving a duel with an immortal (for Kubo's sake) earns him the right to return home to the ocean realm.

Although he still feels loss for his master (and may never truly know what befell Hanzo), he is content to know Kubo is safe, as he returns home for the first time in many years.

In the modern universe, he leads a happier existence as Sammy Bites, a Californian employee for Kabutomushi Industries.  During college days, Sammy was a freshman exchange student at Hanzo's business school.  Poor Sammy was picked on by the Sophomores for being a "Gaikoku Hito".  But Hanzo (being a Junior at the time) stood up for Sammy, who quickly looked up to Hanzo as a big brother figure.  (From time to time, Hanzo likes to nickname his friend "Genji" )
Anyhow, during Hanzo and Sariatu's wedding, Sammy met and fell in love with his future wife.  They too married and had twin daughters.  Shortly after, Hanzo offered Sammy a job opening at his company.  He now works as the care-taker of the company's lobby aquarium.  Sometimes, he's also Hanzo's confident in water sports equipment, but Sammy's simply happy working for a true friend.

Commentary: His tail is based off a type of Japanese shark.

Enjoy!

I do not own "Kubo and the Two Strings".  It belongs to Laika.
I do not own Samebito.  This OC is based off the character by Lafcadio Hearn.

An “eating disorder.” That’s putting it mildly! Him going into hysterics over having no purpose in life is also very human and relatable.

Ha, ha! Sammy BITES! What a name! I like that in the AU he has a very happy existence.

"That's putting it mildly!"   Too true, in Samebito's case.

I like his happier existence too, it's parallel to how
Kubo and his family are together in the modern AU
