Have you seen the Disney animated movie Encanto? It's about a big Colombian family called the Madrigals who have special magic powers, with the exception of a girl named Mirabel, who does not have any powers of her own. As you can imagine, it makes her pretty frustrated. But when she discovers that the magic is in danger, Mirabel decides that she just might be her exceptional family's last hope. As a fantasy-loving Latina woman, I enjoyed the movie because it was fun and intriguing. I've also always wondered what it would be like to have magic powers myself. So, when I saw this Encanto-inspired game on Doll Divine called La Colombiana, which allows people to make their own Encanto OCs, I knew I had to try it out.

I created myself wearing a Colombian-esque outfit similar to the ones that the female characters wear in the movie. But my main inspiration came from Isabela, who is arguably my favorite character in Encanto because she is smart and graceful, despite all the pressure and stress she goes through due to her family expecting her to be perfect all the time. Although not very close with her family for most of the film, Isabela cares for them and wants to do whatever it takes to make them proud. She is also selfless and loyal, willing to sacrifice her happiness for the people she loves the most. But what I really like the most about her is that she has the ability to manipulate nature. She can make flowers and plants grow with just the touch of a finger, and she can grow other kinds of plants such as cacti, trees, and exotic plants. I think that's pretty impressive, and much more interesting than Luisa's super strength, Camilo's shapeshifting powers, or Bruno's future vision.

If I had a magical power like the Madrigals, I wouldn't have just one. Far from it. In my fantasy world, I've always envisioned myself as a friendly witch able to cast different magic spells. Not only would I have the ability to make flowers and plants grow and bloom like Isabela, but I would also have healing powers, rainbow generation and manipulation, stellar manipulation, force field generation, and creating a big magic circle for attacks. Wouldn't that be amazing or what?

If you haven't seen Encanto already, I highly recommend that you check it out if you're interested. Maybe it will inspire you to make your own characters with magic powers, too.
