yes it's sand!
there is no stupid question at all!! i wasn't in the water, i put the tripod just at the limit of the water and like this the ocean don't touch the tripod (and my feet!!)

That's where I went wrong then, on the beach where I tried it, all the sand near the water was waterlogged and sinky

I'll have to wait till my next beach holiday to try again

my brother said use a telephoto lens and do it from further away but I don't have one of those
