Description The sun came out this evening so after all my whinging I put on my boots, strapped on my camera bag and off I went.

I think cameras are like dogs...when you have one you have to take it out for a walk every day.

Great capture, the sense of movement here is very nice e.deviantart.com/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod" />
The lighting is nice, but you should try to bring it out a bit more.
Also, something you really consider, is cropping out that tributary to the right there, the image has a great centrality to it and even a form of symmetry, and that part really removes it. You might have to crop slightly on the right too to compensate, but I think that will help out much more.
One more thing, I think this image should be darkened actually, it would give it an unnerving feeling too it, drawing in the viewer.

Here is the cropped version as we discussed. [link]

I still don't like it anywhere nearly as much as the original.

Hmm, yeah, it does feel lacking
Maybe just a little bit cropped off? I dunno, it just felt as if it went a little too far off the side

Rebacan In reply to Baz135 [2009-04-15 21:39:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes I agree with that. I probably could take a little bit off the right hand side.

Having rated this as fair I will now add that I don't agree about the cropping. I have several shots of this river without the side shoot and I actually think it adds to the photo.

Baz135 In reply to Rebacan [2009-04-11 16:46:48 +0000 UTC]

Really? Alright, that's fine
Although, I would like to see a cropped version uploaded to scraps though, just to compare. You don't have too, but it would be nice to have a comparison
But anywho, that's how critiques work right? Sometimes you do agree, and sometimes you don't. Sometimes you take things from it, and sometimes ya don't. Maybe you only partially take what was suggested. It's all up to you

Rebacan In reply to Baz135 [2009-04-12 02:18:27 +0000 UTC]

I really appreciate the critique and yes I'll upload either a cropped photo or another one I took of just the river at the same time. It may not be right away because it a holiday and I have company. I thought the point of land between the two water flows was really the only thing that made this photo in any way unique.

Great movement in this shot Rebecca. You've been a bit bold with the contrast and saturation on this one too. Nice work.

Thanks Tony. This one seems to have stirred up a bit of chat. I've come to the conclusion that you can't please everyone.

That's very true so you should only try to please yourself. If others like it too that's a bonus.

The "post card" colouring looks great on the water and the trees. The only thing, on a critique type note, that I don't love is what happens to cloud and sky areas with some HDR and tone mapping applications. You know, where light areas of sky get that heavy "ghosting", I think it's called. They can look too unnatural, too dark where it should be lighter. Sometimes I erase back to some of the original sky. Other times I just give up in frustration and leave it.

Rebacan In reply to dogmadic [2009-04-06 18:51:35 +0000 UTC]

and just when you we're telling me you liked my natural looking HDR's I have to go nuts with my new Photomatix Pro. I'm sure it's just a aberration and I'll get back to normal soon.

dogmadic In reply to Rebacan [2009-04-06 19:06:17 +0000 UTC]

Hehe...well I have more than a few examples of having gone nuts with some of my newer apps too. Many of them less successful attempts than this one to be sure.

I meant to put that comment on your front page when but I got distracted when I saw Photomatix. Is this from a single pic or three different versions with diff exposures?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Rebacan In reply to PaulMcKinnon [2009-04-06 18:49:51 +0000 UTC]

This is 3 exposures of the same shot.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

PaulMcKinnon In reply to Rebacan [2009-04-06 18:57:15 +0000 UTC]

Ok thanks. I was reading about Photomatix and it said it works best with 3 different HDR shots. I'm kind of lazy to get three shots in different exposures, plus I think it is kind of hard to get the same shot, the camera could move on the tripod when you change the exposure, clouds move and so on. I can't remember if I tried a download of Photomatix or not but the few times I tried HDR it came out awful. This looks good though, I may have to try it again.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Rebacan In reply to PaulMcKinnon [2009-04-06 20:52:22 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to change the exposure you just set your auto bracket feature on your camera and press the shutter 3 times. I don't even always use a tripod. In this shot I used the railing of the bridge and sometimes I just hold my breath.

No you wouldn't. That wasn't an excuse for dark shadows by the way, the real excuse is that it was late evening and the shadows were dark.

I am so glad you did that because this shot is amazing. It has so much depth and life to it. This is one of my all time favorites.

I also take my camera everywhere but my better half gets a frown every time he sees it so I try to only take things I see as spectacular! The only time it's not a problem is when he can take the dog wherever we're going.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Rebacan In reply to chalutplease [2009-04-05 01:33:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Sandra. I just downloaded the Photomatix Pro and I think it makes quite a difference and it's very simple to use.

I certainly don't have any problem with my better half and cameras as you know. He's just happy that I'm hooked now too. He was away today so I went out on my own. Before I got hooked it's unlikely I would have gone to the woods by myself.

chalutplease In reply to Rebacan [2009-04-05 03:44:57 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to check it out. My mom is now asking for suggestions on editing software and she was a die hard "camera only" photographer.

Since getting the DSLR my better half won't even look at the pics I take. The other day he came in and saw my screen saver and asked where I had downloaded a specific pic and I told him I had taken it...he didn't know what to say. I offered to email it to him so he could have it but he declined. The crazy thing is that he had an SLR film camera and the guy is really good but when I offer to let him use this he declines every time. I can't feel guilty though since from the beginning of time he's worked and played long hours and I've been alone. Now I have something I really enjoy and can share with others. It's made me really happy. Finding the balance is the hard part but we're getting there.

I'm glad you were brave enough to get out on your own because this is astounding. Did you show it to your husband? Does he comment on your art?

Rebacan In reply to chalutplease [2009-04-05 13:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Photomatix doesn't replace any other software all it does is blend the HDR images and basically gives you some options on light. I still use Photoshop for final editing.

As to your not so supportive spouse... it sounds like he's just a tad jealous of your new hobby and independence. Hopefully He will adjust. It would be marvellous if he took an interest, or even joined in, but that might be expecting too much too soon. It sounds like you have been together since you were fairly young. Sikku and I met and married when we were in our late twenties so we have always maintained individual independence in our relationship. It's really a bonus that we enjoy doing so many things together.

Sorry for the late reply Rebecca I've been swamped with school and it doesn't look like the next few weeks will be much better.

I appreciate you sorting me out on what Photomatix is. I'm seeing a lot of HDR that I like. I'll have to take some time over the summer to figure out exactly what it is.

As for my spouse...he'll come around or not. He's 9 years older than I am and while I grew up in Leave it to Beaver world he grew up as a single child in exactly the opposite. I've always made him and the kids #1 and I've finally had enough and decided it's time to do something for me. None of them are liking it but that's tough...I'm feeling old and crusty!

Rebacan In reply to Slice-the-Rainbow [2009-04-05 01:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes I did use a slow shutter speed and also a neutral density filter. I hate that I lose the camera details with the Photomatix program but I'm not sure I can do anything about that.
