Description [09/05/11] This is my first tutorial...coloring lineart. Definitely not the only way to color lineart and probably not even the best way. I would also like to point out that this is a rather "quick and dirty" way of shading, one that I do not use anymore. That said, I hope this is helpful in some way to someone. Also...I apologize for the horrible anatomy. I was still learning!

[EDIT 4.0] It was pointed out to me by ~weaver1217 that I completely skipped right over Step 4. Do not be alarmed. There is no Step 4. Step 4 is just a myth. Proceed directly from Step 3 to Step 5, no not pass Go, do not collect $200. I'm glad you guys like this one so much. One day I'll make a tutorial for the way I paint now. FAQs are now included Added a disclaimer. [/EDIT]

READ THIS! Seriously. For the love of all that is holy, READ THIS! This is a VERY old tutorial and it is no longer the way that I paint. If, for whatever reason, you still insist on following it, disregard steps 2 and 3/4 and READ THIS.
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
This will save you (and me) lots of headache.

I can't find the Channels. Help?

How do I do this in the GIMP? Sorry, but I do not know. Search for GIMP tutorials on DA and they will explain it far better than I ever could.

I know that this is older, but I wanted to say thanks for this! Before I joined dA, I used this to learn coloring. It helped me get started

You are very welcome and thank you for letting me know! That's what I put it here for, and why I've kept it posted for so long. It may not be the best way, or the way I paint anymore, but some people still get a little something from it, and that always makes me happy!

I don't paint like that anymore either, but it did teach me the basics and I learned from there

One more question: does the dodge tool work on black?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to horse782 [2012-04-03 21:17:39 +0000 UTC]

Nope. Neither Dodge nor Burn work on pure black or white. However both work on shades of gray. For very dark/light shades, you may have to turn the strength way up or down depending on the shade and the tool and the desired effect.

horse782 In reply to RebeccaStapp [2012-04-03 21:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I was wondering what was going on. Looks like I'm going to have to recolor it somehow. There's a tool for that, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to horse782 [2012-04-05 13:50:36 +0000 UTC]

Not so much a tool...but on the layers panel there is an option that lets you lock the transparent pixels, which means that you can scribble over the colored parts to recolor it. Kind of hard to explain, but if you're still having trouble you could Google locking the pixels and probably find a good tutorial image or video.

horse782 In reply to RebeccaStapp [2012-04-05 18:07:21 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I just won't work with pure black from now on.

When you say "Dodge" or "Burn" tool, do you mean Color Dodge/Burn or Linear Dodge/Burn?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to horse782 [2012-04-02 14:14:37 +0000 UTC]

Hm. I would assume that it's Color, but Dodge and Burn are actually tools like Brush, Eraser, and Smudge. Look for them on the left side of your screen.

When I do Step 3, the whole thing goes black.
Also, how do you get the lines to stop being dashed?

Okay, this is a very old tutorial that was made before I understood Photoshop and very likely I need to take it down. If for some reason you still want to follow it: The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.

That's pretty much all there is to it.

click on the select tool, it is the square with dotted lines, near the top. click on the tool, then click any where on the picture. The moving lines should stop. Now continue following the tutorial.

RebeccaStapp In reply to WhiteLotusStables [2012-02-04 07:00:18 +0000 UTC]

Click on one of your selection tools (either the lasso or the marquee) and then click once on your canvas, anywhere outside of your current selection. That should fix it...sounds like you just aren't deselecting the lines.

Also, take a look at the artist's comments to see a much simpler way of separating your lineart.
