Description
[09/05/11] This is my first tutorial...coloring lineart. Definitely not the only way to color lineart and probably not even the best way. I would also like to point out that this is a rather "quick and dirty" way of shading, one that I do not use anymore. That said, I hope this is helpful in some way to someone. Also...I apologize for the horrible anatomy. I was still learning![EDIT 4.0] It was pointed out to me by ~weaver1217 that I completely skipped right over Step 4. Do not be alarmed. There is no Step 4. Step 4 is just a myth. Proceed directly from Step 3 to Step 5, no not pass Go, do not collect $200. I'm glad you guys like this one so much.
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
This will save you (and me) lots of headache.

I can't find the Channels. Help? The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
How do I do this in the GIMP? Sorry, but I do not know. Search for GIMP tutorials on DA and they will explain it far better than I ever could.

I'm not sure - I've never used it. Theoretically I guess you could do it in any program with layers, layer styles, and transparency.

Hmm...then your best bet might be the "Help" section of whatever program you are trying to use. Or the website for the software. I know that the Adobe Photoshop website has hundreds of super useful tutorials for every level of user - and they explain what all the tools and functions of the program actually do.

Thousands of people use GIMP though! Maybe millions, I dunno. So long as you download it from a reputable source (like gimp.org...which is THE source) then there is virtually no risk of viruses. You have a greater virus risk just by coming to Deviant Art, lol.

The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
When I'm talking about the dark and white layers, I mean create 2 new layers underneath your lineart. Fill one of them with a dark color. Fill one of them with white. Simple as that.

Yes...it kind of is. Though you may want to look for a GIMP specific tutorial, because I'm really not much help on that. I've only used Photoshop.

what colors did you use? like what #? I know its a shade of brown but i keep trrying d1c2b0, but its not the same! can you help??

RebeccaStapp In reply to gurtagon [2011-09-25 20:47:57 +0000 UTC]
Honestly I'm not sure. I think I used the lightest warm brown and the lightest cool brown that is in the default Photoshop swatches. If you have to have the exact colors, copy the image into whatever program you use and use the eyedropper tool. But using different colors is part of the creative process.

It should. If the lineart separating does not work, just set the lineart layer mode to Multiply and then follow the rest of the steps.

Keep looking - there is bound to be one somewhere. Also, if you have layer options in Gimp, you can set set it to Multiply and that should be the same thing. But...yeah, I have no idea on Gimp.

You can also changed the layer type to "Multiply" and get exactly the same effect.

Can anyone translate step 2 and 3 to GIMP?

mrbun26 In reply to howrseytail [2011-02-24 03:06:27 +0000 UTC]
For step 2, use the color select tool and click outside of the lineart, than press Ctrl+I and then the lines will be selected. For step 3, while the selection is still active create a new layer(you can always do it before the selection, I find it easier) and get the paint bucket tool and have it to whatever color you want you likes to be and fill in the selection. Make sure when you have you bucket tool that you click "Fill whole selection" or something like that were you edit you setting in the tool box. If you are using a transparent background(which I suggest) is all you have to do is duplicate the layer, if not, then you would do what I said for in step 3. Hope that helps. You can note me if you need and help with gimp, I've been using it for all my graphics.

This tutorial does work well with GIMP, if you have used it for a while then you would know how to translate some of the things. If you don't know a translation for something I can help.
